My first book by this author, and won’t be my last
Revisado: 08-22-24
I really enjoyed this story…so much so that I listened to the entire book in 2-3 days. It had me hooked from beginning to end. The only negative thing I can say, is that I didn’t care for the female narrator’s voice when she did the male speaking parts. It sounded a bit like a robotic Kermit the frog. Other than that, I really enjoyed both the male and female narrators. This was a sweet story full of everything you’d imagine facing on the Oregon Trail. Hope, sickness, love, death, fear, perseverance, heartbreak, and more.

So so, not my favorite and wouldn’t listen to again
Revisado: 08-02-21
This book was alright. I listened to it in the span of one day since I was either driving or doing housework most of the day. I actually fell asleep for a bit listening to this book, but didn’t bother to rewind what I had missed while I slept. It was a little on the boring side. I have discovered I much prefer audio books that have both male and female narrators. When one person tries to do both voices, it just isn’t the same. One gender always ends up getting the short end of the stick and lacking emotion and cadence. In this book, the female narrator always used a rushed lower voice for the male part that just fell completely flat and I just couldn’t fall in love with the male character because of it. Also, I was under the impression that this was the second book in a series which is why I listed to it. The first book was called Prairie bride or something along those lines. I purchased this book only because I thought it would have characters from the previous book and tie the story lines together, but that was not the case. This is a stand alone book and doesn’t really have anything to do with the first one, other than the fact that the story takes place in the same town, and I think there was mention of one familiar name ( the widow Harper ) that was not a main character at all in the previous book. Unless I missed a bunch while I was asleep, but I don’t think that’s the case. Given the chance again, I would pass on this series even though I have enjoyed a few of the authors other books in the past. (I found the Highlander series much more entertaining)

A big disappointment
Revisado: 05-25-21
The story was hard to follow at times, way too much swearing/taking the Lord’s name in vain, and overall left me feeling like it was a huge waste of time. I did not care for the narrator’s voices and “Boston” accents either. It was very distracting because of how forced and inconsistent they were. Down London Rd was has been one of my favorite books so far, so I perhaps I had higher expectations than I should have for this one.

Had to know how the story ended
Revisado: 08-09-20
I had just finished the first book in this series, Where The Blame Lies, and needed to listen to this one next to see what happened. Listened to the entire thing in 2 days. I enjoyed it even more than the first one and was sad when it ended! I’m going to be looking for more of Mia Sheradon’s books to listen to next. (P.S- if I could change one thing about this series, it would be to leave out so much of the swearing, especially taking the Lords name in vain. I really don’t appreciate that and cringed so many times.)

Enjoyable
Revisado: 08-08-20
This was a good listen. Enjoyable. A little steamy, a little suspenseful, a little tragic, and a little bit of everything else. It wasn’t one of those books that had me crying or laughing out loud, but I really did enjoy it. I listed to it in 2-3 days from start to finish. I’ll be looking up more books to listen to from this author now. The narrators also did a great job.

Painfully made my way through this book
Revisado: 05-24-20
Not my favorite book...not by a long shot. I had just finished “On Dublin Street” before this one and was hoping for another great listen.
So many times throughout this book I was tempted to quit and give up. The narrator was completely the wrong choice for this story. She was good, but her voice sounded like a grandmother, and did not fit any of the characters in this book. (Except maybe the horrid mothers) The story was somewhat interesting at times, but I did not feel it was worth the credit.

SIGH- I wanted this book to go on forever!
Revisado: 05-22-20
I loved loved LOVED this book! I listened to the sample audio before hesitantly using one of my credits. I almost regretted it as soon as I did, wondering if I should’ve chosen something else.
Boy am I glad I did. Best book I’ve read (listened) to in years. The author did an amazing job of making me feel the characters in this book. I felt like I knew them, like I was right there with them watching as their whole story unfolded right before my very eyes. I laughed out loud, I teared up, and enjoyed every single minute. And now I’m left heartbroken that the story has ended and I feel like I didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye to my friends in the book that I had grown to love.
I’m in that book coma, where I don’t even want to start another book for fear of it not measuring up. Maybe I’ll just put this on repeat and listen to it again instead! Fair warning for those considering it- there are several pretty steamy (non bdsm) sex scenes and some adult language. If you’re comfortable with that, then please do yourself a favor and put this book in your library.

Too dark, too twisted, too much
Revisado: 05-21-20
I love a good “falling in love with your captor” story, but I was naive in thinking this would be one of them. I didn’t realize it was SO heavily BDSM. This is the first book I’ve read with this type of content. It was too dark for me. At times my stomach physically felt sick and I almost gave up trying to finish it. It took things to a scary new level that I just didn’t enjoy. In fact I felt myself wondering time and time again if this kind of thing really turns people on? Whether or not you enjoy this book, will depend on how you feel about BDSM and how dark you like to go. This was clearly out of my comfort zone. I rated it as highly as I did because the narrators were absolutely amazing. They both did an incredible job and I couldn’t have asked for better narrations from either of them. The author can also clearly write well, and the quality was there, I just didn’t enjoy the content. Now I need to find an innocent wholesome book to cleanse my mind of the twisted and disturbing things I just listened to!

In this searing memoir of survival in the spirit of Stolen Innocence, the daughter of Warren Jeffs, the self-proclaimed Prophet of the FLDS Church, takes you deep inside the secretive polygamist Mormon fundamentalist cult run by her family and how she escaped it. Born into the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Rachel Jeffs was raised in a strict patriarchal culture defined by subordinate sister wives and men they must obey.

Rachel’s strength and courage amazed me!
Revisado: 01-02-20
I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make it through this book after listening to the sample because of Rachel’s voice, but I was curious enough to try. At first, I thought her voice sounded strange and very child like, but after listening for an hour or so, I grew to actually enjoy it. It’s HER voice. What better way to hear this story than from the very person who lived it? I also think her voice is a reflection of the way she grew up. Women are taught to be meek, quiet, and obedient. You can hear that in her voice, and I think it still tells the story of what she’s been through even though she’s no longer there. Much like a gang member’s tattoo would be an indication of their past even if they no longer lived that life. Anyways, Rachel, if you ever happen to read this, please don’t be offended. You have a strong and beautiful heart, and it just takes the rest of us a bit to get accustomed to the way you speak.
I’ve always been curious about the FLDS, and I knew things were hard for them, I just had no idea HOW hard! There were times while listening to this book, my heart could hardly handle what my ears were hearing. She suffered so much hurt, and I just wanted to cry at what she was going through. Rachel, I’m sure I’ll never meet you, but I’m so proud of you. Thank you for being brave enough to share your story. I wish you and your family a lifetime of happiness!
