Historia
It’s spring and Three Pines is reemerging after the harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should reemerge. But something has. As the villagers prepare for a special celebration, Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir find themselves increasingly worried. A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines. But to what end?

Ganache just gets better - and grimmer
Revisado: 12-27-22
Another psychological thriller from Louise Penny took me just to the brink of my own sanity and comfort zone. I feel like I’m in the mind of Chief Inspector Gamache, inside his fears, which aren’t so different from my own. The writing is so careful, so deep, that it me root for developing and redeemable relationships and characters as if they were my own family.

Historia
Renowned and beloved as a prizewinning novelist, Dara Horn has also been publishing penetrating essays since she was a teenager. Often asked by major publications to write on subjects related to Jewish culture - and increasingly in response to a recent wave of deadly anti-Semitic attacks - Horn was troubled to realize what all of these assignments had in common: She was being asked to write about dead Jews, never about living ones.

Great book, audio misses on pronunciations
Revisado: 01-15-22
The story is great. Horn weaves a view of contemporary Jewish experience through history and literature that strikes a deep chord within me. Aha! moments come. One after the other.
I’m disappointed by the reading. Given everything that is in this book it is ironic — and not in a good way — that the audiobook narrator mispronounced so many names and words throughout.

Historia
Harry August is on his deathbed. Again. No matter what he does or the decisions he makes, when death comes, Harry always returns to where he began, a child with all the knowledge of a life he has already lived a dozen times before. Nothing ever changes. Until now. As Harry nears the end of his 11th life, a little girl appears at his bedside. "I nearly missed you, Doctor August", she says. "I need to send a message". This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.

Provocative twists of time and personality
Revisado: 07-24-17
What if you lived you lived the same life again and again, with a building of knowledge? What if you weren't the only one?
It's not quite Groundhog Day, but it isn't not that, either.
Digging deep through ethical questions--if you can change some things about the world but not everything; if you could trace another's steps (but they yours, too); if future generations could ask of the past....
The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August navigates these questions sometimes with troubling ease. Read it yourself, then think about these questions, and your own.

Cajun and Voodoo infused crime = fun!
Revisado: 04-10-16
I quite enjoyed this. The Cajun and Voodoo cultural pieces were fascinating, and the crimes were infused with them in believable ways. I'm glad I picked it up. The reader was my least favorite part of the experience, and she was good, it's just that some readers don't do as much for me. If I have a complaint it's that the book would have been fine without what felt like gratuitous sex scenes. I guess I like sex to be hinted at, unless the book is about that, and this was rather detailed.

Suspense, Archaeology, and strong real Woman
Revisado: 10-17-13
What made the experience of listening to The Crossing Places the most enjoyable?
The gentle nature of the reader, and the nuances between characters all made this a great listening experience. The story flows smoothly, though there are a couple of moments when it transitions from one focus to another when a longer pause might have helped me make the transition better.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Didn't want to put it down. Things moved quickly, but I found myself wondering until the very end just which character was the "bad guy." Depth of character, despite what seemed like caricatures, kept the suspense high.
Have you listened to any of Jane McDowell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was my first by this performer, but I'd choose her again!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Brought me to tears at a couple of points - both from relief and from sadness.

A pleasant, fun "read" - if somewhat predictable
Revisado: 08-19-13
Would you listen to Knit One, Kill Two again? Why?
Yes. Performance was pleasant and not overly affected. Characters were genial.
Would you be willing to try another book from Maggie Sefton? Why or why not?
I'd love to have more of this series on audible (currently skips from book 1 to book 9, and not searchable as a series), and I'd love to see her other series on audible, too. This is exactly the kind of book I enjoy listening to, since the only way I make time for mysteries is multi-tasking (listening while cleaning house, for example).

One of the best Needlecrafts! (And performers)
Revisado: 08-02-13
What about Susan Boyce’s performance did you like?
I'm so glad to be back in Susan Boyce's performance of this series. She is a terrific narrator, and gets characters of all ages, genders, and personalities to come alive. I was disappointed by the few books in the middle of this series that were read by other narrators, but knowing I would get back to her was incentive to keep listening.
Any additional comments?
I think this is one of the best of the Needlecraft mysteries. Ferris is good, but she gets a little long-winded in some of her books. This one comes back to crafty, concise writing, with a pretty good balance of needlecraft information (perhaps not quite enough, but pretty good).
This whole series has drawn me back into crochet (with thoughts about some of the other needlework I've done), and there were some intriguing tidbits in this book about patterns that I'd love to see, though she only links to a cross-stitch pattern (not my cup o' tea - I'm a free form crewel work or crochet kind of gal).

Strays (madly) into fantasy, not just mystery
Revisado: 03-16-13
If you’ve listened to books by Charlotte MacLeod before, how does this one compare?
If you are reading the Peter Shandy series and expect another Balaclava mystery, be prepared. It doesn't take place at Balaclava College by a long stretch. On the other hand, the story stands up to expected quality, even if it falls down the rabbit hole with Alice (McLeod's own allusion).
