Historia
Over twenty years ago, the heiress Patricia Lockwood was abducted during a robbery of her family's estate, then locked inside an isolated cabin for months. Patricia escaped, but so did her captors - and the items stolen from her family were never recovered. Until now. On the Upper West Side, a recluse is found murdered in his penthouse apartment, alongside two objects of note: a stolen Vermeer painting and a leather suitcase bearing the initials WHL3. For the first time in years, the authorities have a lead - with the suitcase and painting both pointing them toward one man.

Action packed, Thoughtful

great read, couldn't wait to see where the plot turned next. loved that Win was a Batman-like figure without a disguise and unbelievable weapons and vehicles, yet wealthy enough to cut through walls that hardscrabble, down and out detectives in other novels seem to face. You don't have to suspend logic time after time when Win escapes impossible traps or gunshots like many others I have read. extra points for me for mentioning Glen Onoko, where some of the plot takes place; it's near beautiful Jim Thorpe, PA. minor deduction for the safe box scene: when a box is drilled, the old owner would not have access to the actual old box, especially with the old keys. the contents would likely be shipped to a central location after drilling and an inventory completed locally, then if unclaimed, sent to the state's department of Treasury for safekeeping after a legislatively prescribed period of time.

Historia
During the Great Depression, labor camps crop up in remote areas throughout the American South. Destitute workers live under terrible conditions. Trapped in these isolated locations, workers are entirely dependent on the often greedy, abusive camp owners who provide food and housing at grossly inflated prices. But for the most desperate among America's vast unemployed, these camps are often the last and only option.

well written, researched & performed, but...
Revisado: 03-19-23
this is a typically well written book by a great author, but the subject matter became too upsetting for me to continue, and I had to restart it a few times to get through it. I am not a prude by any means, but this should have (and maybe did) come with a warning that the matters may be considered offensive to some listeners. that being said, I felt relieved when I did finish the book

Historia
"One of the best acid tests of an introductory book...is that the text allows the reader to learn an important skill independent of the illustrations. Fly casting is very difficult to teach in person, and even more so in print, yet this book contains the best, the most interesting, and the most effective introduction to fly casting I have ever read."

Accessible, engaging, informative!
Revisado: 03-13-21
As a beginner fly fisherman, I have consumed podcasts, youtube videos, and Facebook fishing group posts, in an obsessive way over this winter, in preparation for the Spring.
I felt the need to view this info in a linear, less overwhelming, less scattered way. this book was exactly what I needed. I listened in less than a week and will now go back and take some notes.
well written, well performed (think Paul Harvey's staccato entertaining, fact sharing style if you're old enough to remember) and mostly facts and recreatable drills with some interesting literary and historic references thrown in (and a little old music as well) not too heavy handed and stilted like some others I have reviewed, not condescending at all. Don't know elementary terms like "pocket water"all and "drag free"? These terms and more are well explained here, without judgement. All in all a great effort. The Tom Rosenbauer recommendation helped too! P. S the final chapter, a vignette of the catching of one fish good was mesmerizing and inspiring. Art, indeed!

Historia
The Arsenal of Democracy tells the incredible story of how Detroit answered the call, centering on Henry Ford and his tortured son Edsel, who, when asked if they could deliver 50,000 airplanes, made an outrageous claim: Ford Motor Company would erect a plant that could yield a “bomber an hour”. Critics scoffed: Ford didn’t make planes; they made simple, affordable cars. But bucking his father’s resistance, Edsel charged ahead.

Amazing testimony of American resolve & Ingenuity
Revisado: 04-07-17
This book tells of American resolve and Ingenuity in the desperate wake of the Great Depression and onset of WWII to mobilize hundreds of thousands of men, women, minorities and disabled people to design and produce the weapons and machinery of war, leading to the defeat of Hitler's Nazi regime and the Axis powers.
For me, the highlight and common thread woven through this story was the very real and common family struggles of Henry, Edsel and Henry Ford II to keep and regain control of their manufacturing empire against this backdrop.
A great resource for automobile enthusiasts, students of WWII, and anyone interested in the joys and heartaches of families in business together.
as relevant and interesting today as on the day it was written. it will make you proud to be an American!
