Was the Civil War really about slavery? Or was it a war fought over money? Civil War historian Samuel W. Mitcham Jr., (Vicksburg, Bust Hell Wide Open) opens his fascinating new book, It Wasn't About Slavery, with Dr. Grady McWhiney's claim that "what passes as standard American history is really Yankee history written by New Englanders or their puppets to glorify Yankee heroes and ideals".

Anti-scholarly, bordering on anti-intellectual “history”
Revisado: 03-12-24
TLDR; Heavily-biased “historical” writing. The book can be summed up as “everybody was racist, everybody hated black people, everybody in the north was profiting massively from slavery as well, the North was filled with hypocrites, and the war was really about States’ rights to sovereignty within the constitutional framework.”Ironically, the author keenly sidesteps the fact that the key “right” the confederate states were fighting to protect was their right to property in other human beings. Not a total waste of time, but definitely a bit of a waste of time.
As someone who thoroughly enjoys scholarly works on history, and as a believer in seeking as many perspectives as possible in order to gain the most complete picture and sense of any bygone era or historical epoch, coming across this work initially seemed like an opportunity to gain greater clarity on some of the other economic and sociopolitical causes that precipitated the civil war. Even if the titled betrayed that the information within would more than likely be diffused through a Southern and/or Confederacy-sympathizing lens. As the civil war is one of my favorite eras of study, and having already ingested the works of a multitude of authors ranging from Shelby Foote to Bruce Catton, Eric Foner and other great historians, I saw this as a chance to potentially fill in some blanks and glean new tidbits of information to clarify my understanding of the era. I was, however, sadly mistaken in this hope and assumption. While I will admit that there are small bits of new information here and there, this book seems much more like a work of punditry or slavery-apologism, especially in the authors use of castigating language towards subjects with whom he takes umbrage. In the spirit of not being long-winded, let me just say that any serious scholarly reader or individual seeking new information free of heavy bias, beware. Not all works of history are created equal. Not only are there blatant mischaracterizations of events and historical figures relative to the period, it appears the author wrote with only one agenda in mind and rigidly stuck to it throughout, doing a real disservice to what this book could have been. The narrator was a lone bright spot in an otherwise deeply underwhelming stroll through mildly racist, revisionist “history”. A truly world-class exercise in what-aboutism and deflection. Poorly researched, poorly presented, passably written and constructed.

Needs to be re-edited
Revisado: 02-23-24
The wisdom, historical information, and genius contained within the pages of these great works, is sullied by an audio editing job done so poorly as to almost seem malicious. I have attempted to contact museumaudiobooks.com but to no avail as their website seems to no longer be functional. Every book with the exception of the miseducation of the negro contains COPIOUS editing errors. So much so that it was at times a struggle to get through them. These books deserve so much better than the treatment they received at the hands of whoever edited them on behalf of museum audiobooks. However, I am still grateful that they are available, albeit in this somewhat diminished form.

Historia
In this eloquent and persuasive book, Neil Postman examines the deep and broad effects of television culture on the manner in which we conduct our public affairs, and how "entertainment values" have corrupted the very way we think. As politics, news, religion, education, and commerce are given less and less expression in the form of the printed word, they are rapidly being reshaped to suit the requirements of television.

Prescient and thought-provoking
Revisado: 11-26-23
To think that this book was authored just about 40 years ago blows my mind. It’s as if the author himself visited our current reality, and having seen a glimpse of what was to come, did his best to warn the world of the perils of constant distraction. Yet, here we are, living in the dystopian nightmare of “reality” television and 24/7 entertainment via streaming and cable. While a few of his early points, especially those regarding the typographic mind and society, can be reasoned away as being too heavily biased, much of what he posits is not only true, but starkly relevant to our and all future generations of human beings. A must read and I only wish that an updated version existed.

Timeless wisdom from a timeless mind
Revisado: 11-24-23
Neville Goddard stands out as one of the more brilliant and adept of the 20th century thought masters. His understanding and adaptation of scripture into his philosophical teachings, while imperfect, is profound and impactful nonetheless. There is great wisdom to be found in every second of this read/listen and I’m sure that his inspired work will continue to impress itself upon the minds of seekers of wisdom and knowledge for generations to come. Well done on his part and a worthwhile read for those on the path of truth and enlightenment!

Historia
The 19th century witnessed some of the most far-reaching social and political changes in English history. In volume 4, we trace the arc of England's march to worldwide imperial dominance along with the nation's reckoning with her poorest citizens. It is a story of contrast and courage. The contrast is between those with titles, money, and power...and those lacking any or all of these.

Well narrated. Beautiful rethorical prose.

Well done, but it should be taken with a large grain of salt
Revisado: 06-23-23
It’s a relatively thorough history of the epoch. The narrator does a wonderful job of bringing the prose to life. It is however, and unfortunately so, written with a definite aristocratic hue which taints the ability of the listener to receive the truest sense of the total history. It is most certainly dated in some of the historian’s more ignorant viewpoints towards native and indigenous peoples that the British empire brought under their control and influence via military and economic means. And while this does not ruin the book entirely, it does throw into question the author’s motivations and decisions about who they choose to paint in a positive or negative light, which once again, does the book (and any historical work that engages in this sort of skewed rhetoric for that matter) a disservice.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

A MUST read!
Revisado: 07-04-19
I won’t be too long winded with this review. Just know that this is a well-written and excellently read book. A masterful tome giving a thorough (albeit incomplete) recounting of history relevant to all mankind. This was brilliantly executed and the book itself raises thought-provoking questions within the mind about the fundamental nature of existence and how our history can and may ultimately serve as our roadmap for where we are headed as a species. 5 stars, a must read for any and all inquisitive minds!!

Must read for the next generation of business leaders!!
Revisado: 04-12-18
I first came across Gary Vee on my FB feed. Some friends would repost his motivational videos and I appreciated his no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is approach. He wasn’t afraid to make statements that would ordinarily ruffle feathers. I came across his first book, “Crush it” earlier this year, and after listening to it I became hooked! He provided a wonderful blueprint for how to approach life and business in the age of social media and in “Crushing it!” he takes those principles and expounds on them in very meaningful ways. The stories and examples that he uses throughout the book are very in-depth and paint clear pictures as to some of the strategies utilized by social mega-influencers to build their brands and change their lives. He allows the reader to follow along clearly, and in his signature style he takes time to go off script and explain concepts or ideas or thoughts in greater detail. I will be listening to this book again in the coming days and I can’t wait!! Gary Vee is a God-sent in this modern era of social media and business. I highly recommend this book for anyone seeking to take their hobby/passion/work and transform it into opportunity and success for themselves! His outlined philosophies are sound and I’ll be applying them to my own life moving forward. Don’t hesitate, don’t wonder, just get this book and be prepared to take notes and find yourself transformed!
