I like the way the author Alternated pieces of its characters lives throughout the book, taking them up , leaving them for while and coming back to them. A skillfully novelistic and entertaining history.

Claire Keegan's simple language begins to tell a rich and moving story before you know it's started, and then you care deeply about the characters and what happens to them. An extraordinary novella.

Brilliant writing, a great story, characters I quickly got to like and won't forget. I've read most of Mitchell's books, and this is right up there, very high. Excellent audio reading, too.

This constantly amusing and eloquent story, probably the greatest book-length poem in English, is a pure delight, always entertaining. The author speaks right to the reader, joking and showing off his erudition while telling a great, episodic story. Don Juan (pronounced in the British way as "Don Joo-an," or sometimes by Bryon, "Jooney,") is not the sexual predator of other versions of the story but a rather sweet, hapless young man whom women, young and old, coarse and aristocratic, can't keep their hands off of. Lots of swashbuckling adventures, pirates, shipwrecks along the way, with the author's many digressions from the story as entertaining as the action.
The reader, Jonathan Keeble, is terrific, a wonderful ham, perfect for the material.

Some of the most powerful stories about war ever written--not about fighting but about the effects of combat on soldiers and others, deep psychological insight into personal tragedies and redemption. Literary fiction, deserving the National Book Award
