The end?
Revisado: 03-23-25
The book was well written, but it all built up to what didn’t even sound like a conclusion. I had to go back because I thought the player had skipped forward. I know it’s supposed to leave you wanting more, but it was so abrupt it seemed like the author left it unfinished. It was disappointing after investing time and interest for the book to end without am actual ending.

Historia
Sloane Parker is dreading her birthday. She doesn’t need a reminder she’s getting older, or that she’s feeling indifferent about her own life. Her husband surprises her with a birthday-weekend getaway—not with him, but with Sloane’s longtime best friend, troublemaker extraordinaire Naomi. Sloane anticipates a weekend of wine tastings and cozy robes and strategic avoidance of issues she’d rather not confront, like her husband’s repeated infidelity.

Thirsty for more
Revisado: 09-17-24
I have read all of Rachel Harrison’s books, I think this one is my favorite. I do wish the main character would’ve stopped going on about being so old at 36. It isn’t that old. That’s my only complaint.

But now Dani can’t stop thinking about her seemingly healthy husband, Clark, dropping dead. Not because she hates him (not right now, anyway) but because it’s become abundantly clear to Dani that if he dies, she and Lotte will be left destitute. And then Dani discovers The Temple.

Amazing read and narration
Revisado: 09-03-24
I fully enjoyed this book. It’s offbeat and quirky and if you’re against sex work, you probably shouldn’t read it. I didn’t agree with all the protagonist’s stances but I don’t think you’re supposed to necessarily. The book is also narrated exceptionally well.

The perfect descent
Revisado: 10-28-23
I wish there was more to read. I could’ve kept going for days. I love how all of Mona’s work has a visceral and beautifully lavish way of guiding you through the black magic. I have now read Bunny, Rouge, and All Is Well and I can’t even decide which is my favorite. Great book. Deep character building. Hypnotic. Buy it.

Visceral and Engaging
Revisado: 10-13-23
I loved how the author set the scene for every situation and built out Rachel as a multi-dimensional character. I loved this book, and the heartbreaking story in the story Miriam tells that's devastatingly heartbreaking. Highly recommend.

Historia
Montserrat has always been overlooked. She’s a talented sound editor, but she’s left out of the boys’ club running the film industry in ’90s Mexico City. And she’s all but invisible to her best friend, Tristán, a charming if faded soap opera star, though she’s been in love with him since childhood. Then Tristán discovers his new neighbor is the cult horror director Abel Urueta, and the legendary auteur claims he can change their lives—even if his tale of a Nazi occultist imbuing magic into highly volatile silver nitrate stock sounds like sheer fantasy.

Less story and more factoids
Revisado: 09-25-23
I really wanted to love this novel. I could tell the author was building up a strong independent female protagonist and I am a huge horror fan. But there was more time focused on technical details and factoids about film sound and production and Nazi history than actual character development or description of the present moments. Even the dialogue was very dry and often used as a tool to regurgitate research and historical data instead of a natural flow of conversation. The book could probably be about a half or third of the actual length if you cut out all the sterile research and made it more human. Obviously a capable writer but I’m not sure what audience she’s writing for exactly. Maybe people who want more of a documentary than straight fiction just not my thing.

Edie is stumbling her way through her 20s - sharing a subpar apartment in Bushwick, clocking in and out of her admin job, making a series of inappropriate sexual choices. She is also haltingly, fitfully giving heat and air to the art that simmers inside her. And then she meets Eric, a digital archivist with a family in New Jersey, including an autopsist wife who has agreed to an open marriage - with rules.

Absorbing
Revisado: 08-31-23
I binged this novel in just over a day. It’s addictive and so well written with just the right amount of dramatic irony. The narrator read very well and has a perfect voice, only the audio volume kept changing maybe during her different recording sessions and towards the end of the novel there is a low din of construction or yard work in the background that was incredibly distracting.

3 dimensional characters glide through heartbreaking story
Revisado: 08-27-23
This book is a dark read, powerful, visceral, and at its core, exceptionally human. I’m totally confused by the reviews below. I thought the main characters were fleshed out and very knowable in their words and actions and Vanessa’s backstory. At the end of the day it was her story. To me this wasn’t just a story of abuse and survival, but also it spoke to the power your first love can have over you, in this case a pedophile. It’s a little unfortunate that the conversation about consent, what it means, and who has the agency to give it came on the heels of this novel being published. I think it would’ve given the character more closure. Beautifully written and exceptionally read.

Historia
An absentee father collects his son from boarding school after a shocking act of violence. A nanny to a celebrity family hides out in Laurel Canyon in the aftermath of a tabloid scandal. A young woman sells her underwear to strangers. A notorious guest arrives at a placid, not-quite rehab in the Southwest. In 10 remarkable stories, Emma Cline portrays moments when the ordinary is disturbed, when daily life buckles, revealing the perversity and violence pulsing under the surface.
