Historia
Thirty miles off the coast of San Francisco lie the Farallon Islands, known to sailors as the Devil’s Teeth. Despite their fearsome reputation, their remote nature appeals to young Lucy Riley, who in 1859 seeks a new start as a teacher to the lighthouse keepers’ children. But Lucy brings treacherous secrets with her, including a name that isn’t hers and a past she can’t escape. On the island, she meets Will Sisson, a mysterious man who seems to recognize her name—but not her face. Wary of Will at first, Lucy slowly starts to trust him.

The book disappoints.
I really wanted to like it, and kept listening thinking it would get better.

Historia
Rain soaks Tessa Scott as she runs from her car to the old vine-covered property she has been called to survey. She’s too busy to accept a new job, but doing this favor for the grandmother of her childhood sweetheart delays a painful decision she must make about her controlling boyfriend. When Tessa finds a tattered journal carefully hidden inside the house’s ancient fireplace, the tragic story of how Ona was ripped from her mother’s arms to live and work in the palatial Mount Vernon, and the heart-shattering betrayal that led her to risk her life and run, has Tessa spellbound.

Travesty towards memory of Ona Judge
Revisado: 01-14-25
Ona Judge is an inspiration to everyone regardless of their racial heritage.
It is a travesty to place the history of Ona with the modern character, Tessa, who is raunchy. The character tells us, often, how successful and educated she is—so her verbiage makes a mockery of those who are, in reality, less fortunate.
These contrasting characters should not share the same pages in any book.

Disappointed
Revisado: 09-23-24
The idea for a good story was there, but it didn’t quite make it. Slow with a very predictable plot, weak and undeveloped characters, it disappoints after time listening and price paid.

Incestuous plot line
Revisado: 08-25-24
A creepy emotionally-incestuous plot line set amidst the Mormon culture. I stopped reading several times, but thought “maybe a baby was switched at birth.” Each time I restarted was of an interest in the ecological disaster / flood I knew was looming.
That ended with the sister selfishly
deceiving the family, the brother being complicit and likewise deceiving his wife and family.

SKIP the 5th book in this series
Revisado: 06-21-24
The 1st 4 books in the series are lovely stories. The author should have stopped there. The story rambles. The plot line is a poorly written narrative. The characters are flat. I was disappointed and wish I’d have not spent $$$ for this 5th book.

Misleading Title, Disappointed
Revisado: 03-18-24
If you’re looking for a book on WW2 Resistance, this is not it.
Title is totally misleading.
Character spent the first years of the war begrudging Resistance fighters.
When she develops a love interest, she shadows him a couple times.
Her single would-be-act of heroism went awry until the “boyfriend” came to the rescue.
Then she went to sit out the rest of the war in peace and comfort. She doesn’t returns home until until the war was
over. S
Very, very disappointed.

WORST narration—read the book, don’t try listening
Revisado: 01-24-22
Read the book, don’t start listening unless you’ve a high tolerance for what is the worst narration I’ve heard in 397 Audible books I’ve listened to. I read the poor narration reviews, but never imagined Audible would release this this quality before purchasing.
Poor Minnie uses a “w” for any “r” through all her dialogue in a squeaky, high voice. It’s an insult to those who legitimately have a speech impediment.
Rachel has been reduced from an independent female character to a whiny, simpering role. Other female characters sound like poorly done impersonations of adolescent boys.
The gentlemen speak slowly like their wits have been dimmed, are wishy-washy, and usually seem intoxicated.
I apologize to Polly Edsel whose natural narrative is a nice, easy to listen to voice.

SKIP this book!!!
Revisado: 05-17-21
I’ve never written a book review before, but SKIP this title if you’re paying by book for the up until now lovely series. Hours are spent with repeating old back stories you will already know. SPOILER ALERT to summarize the book: Rose’s chest is still bigger than her common sense, Ron is a still a drunk but he finally cleaned his room and washed his clothes, Jim still sees himself as a lucky catch while in the jungle, Delaney is still a liar. A cliff-hanger ending is a picnic with a bomb where all the main characters survive in order to remember how much they love each other.
