Sadly Sophomoric
Revisado: 02-19-25
Clearly a wanna-be Janet Evanovich without the light touch. Basically a teenage romance novel involving a couple’s vaudevillian struggles to deny their lust for each other and, oh yes, there is a mystery to solve with psychic abilities sprinkled in and a bunch of silly old people. Tiresome. Good narration though.

Achieving strength
Revisado: 04-02-24
An interesting story of surviving trauma binding. Susie’s steadfast sense of hope and achievement of strength are remarkable and inspiring. I appreciate her honest self-reflection. I’m also so grateful she didn’t sanctify the primary source of her fear and pain upon his untimely death. Although, when thinking of him, I am tempted to add—what goes around comes around.

Historia
The latest occurrence to disturb the peace in the quaint English village of Walmsley Parva hits rather too close to home - in fact, the prime suspect has taken up residence in Edwina's potting shed. Her elderly gardener Simpkins has been secretly sleeping there after a row with his disreputable brother-in-law and housemate, Hector Lomax. When Hector is found murdered, Constable Gibbs comes looking for Simpkins, last seen arguing with Hector the night before. Based on the sad state of her garden, Edwina has grave doubts that shiftless Simpkins could muster the effort to murder anyone.

Fun read
Revisado: 10-28-23
Narrator is amazing as always, and I love the characters. Story was good, but not as tightly written as the others. Meandered a bit. It was if the author had planned the ending and then figured out how to get there as she wrote the mystery—adding and deleting participants to make it work. Will continue with the series though. Fun read.

Historia
The year is 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.

Historia
There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Not so much woke as realistic
Revisado: 05-23-23
This is an absorbing realistic portrayal of the LAPD and LA community during the terrible fear, chaos, and distrust of the pandemic. So many of my LEO friends identified with the feelings of Bosch and Ballard and how many police agencies have elected to become reactive (or inactive) rather than proactive. This is a great story. I admire Connelly’s willingness to focus on Ballard. His “take” on the female point of view as a police officer is right on and does not detract from the highly entertaining and suspenseful plot. Sure, Bosch’s role is smaller, but the impact of the story is not diminished because of it. Both narrators are exceptional.

Historia
Back when Harry Bosch was just a rookie homicide detective, he had an inspiring mentor who taught him to take the work personally and light the fire of relentlessness for every case. Now that mentor, John Jack Thompson, is dead, but after his funeral his widow hands Bosch a murder book that Thompson took with him when he left the LAPD 20 years before - the unsolved killing of a troubled young man in an alley used for drug deals.

Historia
Having been booked to give a talk at Fethering Library, successful author Burton St Clair invites his old friend Jude to come along. Although they haven't met for 20 years, Jude is not surprised to find that St Clair hasn't changed, with his towering ego and somewhat shaky relationship with the truth. What Jude hadn't been suspecting, however, was that the evening would end in sudden, violent death. More worrying, from Jude's point of view, is the fact that the investigating police officers seem to be convinced that she herself was responsible for the crime. With the evidence stacking up against her, Jude enlists the help of her neighbour Carole.

Lots of Fun
Revisado: 09-11-21
Enjoyed the story-and no, there was no “tacking on” of a subplot to increase the length of the book. Simon Brett clearly had fun ribbing faux intellectuals—academics, poets—even mystery writers and, of course, pretentious Americans. (His accent was a hoot.) Some laugh-out- loud moments. I liked having the usual serene Jude unsettled fo a change. Quite a delightful read.
