Historia
Years ago, the magnificent dragon queen Tintaglia forged a bargain with the inhabitants of the treacherous Rain Wilds. In exchange for her protection against enemy invaders, the humans promised to protect an unhatched brood of dragons. But when the dragons emerged as weak and misshapen hatchlings unable to fend for themselves, dragonkind seemed doomed to extinction. When even Tintaglia deserted the crippled young dragons, the Rain Wilders abandoned the burden of caring for the destructive and ravenous creatures.

I loved the book. It would have been better if the dragons had more feelings aside from arrogance, entitlement, hunger, pride and rage.

Historia
Wizardwood, a sentient wood. The most precious commodity in the world. Like many legendary wares, it comes only from the Rain River Wilds. But how can one trade with the Rain Wilders, when only a liveship, fashioned from wizardwood, can negotiate the perilous waters of the Rain River? Rare and valuable, a liveship will quicken only when three members, from successive generations, have died on board. The liveship Vivacia is about to undergo her quickening, as Althea Vestrit’s father is carried on deck in his death-throes.

It is a frustrating book, in a good way
Revisado: 10-26-24
I think what infuriates me in the book is that Wintrow just let so many words unspoken that he gives people the chance to get away from blame. He should have told his father he was to blame for defiling Vivatia, he brought slaves on to her. Wintrow had trusted the words of other to direct his fate before, and had gone to priesthood and found his place. It was Kyle's unwillingness to uphold his family promise to the priests, stubbornness to listen to other's more knowledgeable than him about liveships and complete rejection of Althea's birthright that cost him his ship. And I think this should have been pointed out to him. He should have not been allowed to convince himself he was wronged. He is stupid, ignorant, hypocritical and inflexible.
I also find it fascinating how the trading families are becoming more patriarchal, how the societal structure is changing in such a short time. Ronika made a HUGE mistake in giving so much power in the hands of a misogynistic man, thinking she would have been spared and now she is dealing with it. Oh, I miss this egalitarian aspect of Buck and the Six Dutchies so much!

Interesting
Revisado: 07-22-24
It is incredible to read this series having read Legends and Rise and Fall beforehand. There are things I do not know if are plot holes or foreshadowing. I hope they are foreshadowing. It is clear that Ryiria was written first, but I really like the fact Legends and Rise and Fall make sure to show history is lost, changed or recounted to what is convenient to the people in power. So nothing felt like retconning until now

Historia
The man who became known as Esrahaddon is reported to have destroyed the world’s greatest empire—but there are those who believe he saved it. Few individuals are as divisive, but all agree on three facts: He was exiled to the wilderness, hunted by a goblin priestess, and sentenced to death by a god—all before the age of eight. How he managed to survive and why people continued to fear his name a thousand years later has always been a mystery...until now.

Revisado: 05-08-24
The only issue for me is that I read this book without reading the entire series. Considering the amount of books before this one, I feel that it would have been a better experience to be engrossed in the world beforehand. But I like the book nonetheless. Missing a little bit of romance and more found family aspects.

It looks like a first book in a saga
Revisado: 04-23-24
The ending is a bit disappointing and there is a lot left unexplained. It did not see any more details about upcoming books.... If this is going to be it, it is unsatisfying.
Also, I feel bad for Misaki, but I can see that the idea for how her story ended comes from a cultural concept I do not understand.
It is a bit frustating, but I'm happy they found contentment at the end, I guess.... too many plot holes, though. And I would like more details from the other characters.
