Excellent series.
Revisado: 07-16-24
Jeff Wheeler has emerged as a major fantasy author. His world building is both intricate and grand, and his characters are both intriguing and believable. This series would be good first read, because it impressive, but he has a website with recommendations for the order in which to read each series. Maybe look at that.

Historia
In this unflinching exploration of corruption in America, Chayes exposes how corruption has thrived within our borders - from the titans of America's Gilded Age (Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, et al.) to the collapse of the stock market in 1929, the Great Depression, and FDR's New Deal; from Joe Kennedy's years of banking, bootlegging, machine politics, and pursuit of infinite wealth to the deregulation of the Reagan Revolution - undermining this nation's proud middle class and union members.

This is the most thorough description of the real deep state you’ll find.
Revisado: 03-08-24
I’ve read dozens of books on the topic and this is perhaps the best. From offering the big sweeping historical view of the challenges to any people’s government anywhere in the world, through considerations of various cultural differences, to the realities of the modern globalized world economy, Chayes describes how corruption networks so readily emerge. The she talks realistically but passionately about how we might prevent our final descent into corruption driven servitude.

Olivia Prior has grown up in Merilance School for Girls, and all she has of her past is her mother’s journal—which seems to unravel into madness. Then, a letter invites Olivia to come home to Gallant. Yet when Olivia arrives, no one is expecting her. But Olivia is not about to leave the first place that feels like home; it doesn’t matter if her cousin Matthew is hostile, or if she sees half-formed ghouls haunting the hallways.

Gothic
Revisado: 01-07-23
Really like Victoria Schwab, and this book is an example of wonderful brilliant writing. The narrator is quite good and there will be places along your journey that will draw you into the way the story is told, so elegantlly and full of suggestion.
But this is not an example of her fantasy writing, so for newbies, this won’t tell as much about the author as other books. For fans, understand that the destination is a little different here, if the destination is even the point of this book. The genre leans to horror more than adventure or fantasy. And horror, as we might describe a movie genre, is the wrong word. This is more like a gothic novel, something written the 19th century. And the language is just as exquisite as found in the best books from that era.

Historia
Just after midnight on April 15, 1912, the passenger steamship Carpathia receives a distress signal from the largest passenger liner ever built, RMS Titanic, which is on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York. Captain Arthur Rostron is awakened to an enormous maritime emergency with little information to guide his actions in answering the call for help. Is the dire threat to the unsinkable Titanic accurate? His ship is more than four hours away; will Carpathia hold together if pushed to never-before-tested speeds?

Interesting, occasionally moving, not strongly narrative
Revisado: 11-05-22
This was a mixed bag for me in that it told a big story with many characters, tossed in some interesting history, and painted a sense of the times, but the narrative wasn’t compelling enough to pull me along. I would ignore listening for day or so. Indeed it’s best moments occasionally popped up unexpectedly and usually gave a sense of the moment, what people were thinking or feeling. That was the best part of the book - emotional vignettes. So that’s good stuff - much to like - but the tale itself was secondary to the setting.

Historia
In the summer of 1990, Eddie Vedder left the surf and sun in San Diego to join a group of friends working to put a new band together in the Seattle underground. Within months, they were anything but underground; they’d found their lead singer, and Vedder went on to lead Pearl Jam on a global takeover of ‘90s culture. In this latest edition of Audible’s Words + Music series, Vedder dives deep, reflecting on a life at the intersection of art, sensitivity, and masculinity.

This is a very intriguing and authentic story of a real person who rose to fame writing and playing music. Also offers some intriguing observations on life. No, you don’t need to come to this as a Pearl Jam fan.

An insightful realistically meaningful book
Revisado: 04-10-22
This was a real story, meaning that the situations, characters, decisions, and actions all fit into a real world. However much of it is wholly accurate, it is very believable and therefore impactful without having to over dramatize every situation. I gained insight into cultural differences and social history. Interesting characters and a very authentic and relatable protagonist.

Historia
A manifesto of business practices for those who sell ideas and advice, The Win Without Pitching Manifesto lays out 12 steps - in the form of proclamations - that owners of creative businesses can take to distance themselves from their competition, regain the high ground in their client relationships and learn to win business without first parting with their thinking or writing lengthy proposals. The 12 proclamations were written to inspire owners of independent creative businesses to rethink how their services are bought and sold.

Powerful ideas well presented
Revisado: 02-21-20
I don’t know the genesis or history of this book. While it’s aimed at creative services agencies, I think it might apply to a range of contracting companies, particularly consultancies. Also built in to the whole premise are some fundamental ideas on how to perceive and present your business to clients (potentially in any setting). I think it’s a worthy investment of time.

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Revisado: 12-30-17
I think anyone interested in understanding more about crypto currencies, the block chain technology, and bitcoin specifically, would find most of what they need in this one book. I would point out that the story ends in 2014. So there’s clearly more history beyond that. Narration is excellent.
