Happy to have read but did not enjoy reading
Revisado: 12-26-22
Interesting story. It raises some interesting philosophical questions and the ending was satisfying.
Unfortunately, the middle part was not written in a way that made it an enjoying read. It's the kind of book that I'm happy to have read, but did not enjoy reading.
I remember thinking the author was trying too hard to make something different from the previous two books (which were great) and ended up overshooting his goal. It's a natural continuation of the previous books, but it's written in a convoluted way. The mystery is made more obscure by the unnecessarily obscure writing. It felt repetitive, the bad kind of philosophical where it's lofty for loftiness' sake, and it felt like the story could have been shortened substantially without losing anything important. I understand the need to give the feeling of time passing, but it should be possible to achieve without getting tiresome/boring.
Based on what I've seen in other reviews, I'm not the only one who thinks this way. And yet, they tend to give it 4 or 5 stars. I assume it is because they're writing the review right after they've finished the book and are still marvelling at the ending. For me the ending made it 3 stars instead of two. And the ending IS great! But a book, in my opinion, is more than the ending. Or it should be. If not, why not just skip to the ending or read a summary?

Deborah Harkness’s sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches, has brought her into the spotlight and galvanized fans around the world. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and a descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, deep in Oxford's Bodleian Library. Bad romance (and not the good kind)
Revisado: 05-15-22
YA-book with romance between young female witch and old male vampire. Voice acting was ok. Story was a bit simple, and can't really be judged apart from the romance. Focus was on the budding romance, and the romance was BAD.
I wish they'd start portraying the male love interest as someone loving, caring and kind. Wish they'd stop making it seem like it's a romantic gesture when the man is highly controlling and possessive and manages to not hurt her despite his instincts, that's a very low bar. When it reached the part before the end, the part that's supposed to be the most exciting, I stopped caring and put the book down.

Jarring juvenile sex-jokes
Revisado: 12-16-21
LitRPG-books are often slightly juvenile and I did enjoy the previous books in the series, but this was bad. I couldn't finish, even though I got close to the end (which is rare for me)
Full of jarring juvenile sex jokes, even more than previous books. Especially in inner dialogue and in banter with his companion. An example is a woman throwing herself at him, unknowingly rubbing her "fun sacs" at him and begging him to accept her commitment to his cause, him struggling to not let her notice he's getting hard, his companion snickering, him quickly accepting her pledge and pulling free from her embrace, and internally praising himself for avoiding detection. Why write this? And lots of jokes about wood, rods, limbs, being hard, fun sacs, animal sex, nagative and/or derogatory comments about ex girlfriends, hints at sexual provess, and comments on sexual usefulness of people he meets.
Inner dialogue is full of self-serving, objectifying, egocentric thoughts, combined with self-praise on how he doesn't act on these impulses.
Close to zero character development.
The title doesn't fit at all.
Good voice actor!

Historia
Ever since he joined Omega Force, Captain Jason Burke has lived with the underlying fear that one day Earth would be discovered. His desire to keep Earth's existence and location a secret has driven him to extremes, and kept him far away from his homeworld for a long time. But now Jason's greatest fear is realized, and a fleet of alien ships has attacked his planet. Omega Force rushes to Earth's defense, but the ships are like none they've ever encountered, and employ weapons they have no defense for.

Interesting... but horrible female characters
Revisado: 11-01-16
In the previous books, there was only one female character and she only had a minor role. The rest were either male or male androids. This didn't really bother me much. This has been an interesting series so far, with a simple but entertaining story and a good narrator.
In this book we're introduced to the captains' love interest and it becomes clear that the author has trouble writing believable female characters and non-stereotypical interaction whenever the love interest is involved. Not only is she written as a stereotypical "damsel in distress" with only a few functions: overly emotional and dramatic/irrational, in need of saving, sexy and destabiliser of the crew dynamic, the captain is also written as the stereotypical knight in shining armour whenever she's around (example: won't go on missions that might include risk if she's on board). The interaction between the two is overly predictable as if taken out of an old TV drama.
There are parts of the book where she's not around. Those parts are like the previous books, mostly, however her presence does affect the overall story as well as the minor plot points, and so the story itself suffers and becomes predictable and silly.
The ending suggested the female love interest might be included in the later books as well. Normally that would be awesome, but I doubt the writing will have improved by then and so I'm dropping this series. I'll go look for a new series with less stereotypical, less predictable, less annoying and less cringe worthy characters.
