Weakest story so far...

I love these mysteries, but was disappointed by the plodding and humorless plot of this installment. I also hope to never hear the phrase “whore of Babylon” ever, ever again.

Irritating

Would you try another book from Nina Laurin and/or Vanessa Johansson?

I realize this is a first effort, so stuck with the story as long as I could.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The main character is so unsympathetic and makes so many bad choices I could not finish the book.

Any additional comments?

Not a bad first start, but needed to engage the reader right from the beginning and I felt I no longer cared about the characters way too soon.

Second half is better...

I found the first half of this book to be slow and I could not identify with or care about the protagonist. Then, around the middle of the story, the characters got more real and the storyline more carefully crafted. If you like Chicago you will enjoy the locations for the action.

The storyline just went too far off track for me to find it believable. I stopped 1/3 of the way into listening - just could not suspend my disbelief any longer.

Violence vs. torture

Everything about this book is great except the needless premise of a woman literally tortured by her husband. It adds nothing to the story or the behavior of the characters. Gratuitous and spoils the setting.

Too brief to be a novel

The story is interesting, but told too briefly. This is a novella more than a full Longmire mystery.

Well paced

I felt this was one of the best Brady stories - rich characters, multiple storylines that were easy to follow and good character development.

Definitely must suspend disbelief...

The author is a master of words, dialogue and scene setting. The reader is the best I've heard (and I listen to many Audible books on my very long commutes), but this is my 2nd book by Tana French and it may be the last. She needs a plot coach and needs to bring her stories back into the realm of plausibility. Too many times the listener is required to overlook ridiculous premises and character behavior in order for the story to work. The author is too good with language to be wasted on bad story construction.

Short but good!

Very well done, but ended too soon! Would like to see more development of the protagonists background and family reaction. Maybe this will get picked up in the next full length book.

I listened to this book while commuting to and from work and could hardly wait to get back in my car to restart the story. The reader is very good. I will definitely look for more by this author!
