Historia
In Hunt, Gather, Parent, Doucleff sets out with her three-year-old daughter in tow to learn and practice parenting strategies from families in three of the world’s most venerable communities: Maya families in Mexico, Inuit families above the Arctic Circle, and Hadzabe families in Tanzania. She sees that these cultures don’t have the same problems with children that Western parents do.

A powerful contrast to American parenting
Revisado: 09-06-21
Great parenting content, and a worthwhile prompt to challenge how the overwhelming majority of westerners raise their kiddos. That said – and while I trust the author's positive intent – I have 2 related criticisms to inform the reading.
1) Culturally it reads as one-sided. I realize the purpose is to raise up practices in other cultures. But most stories followed a predictable framework:
Problem - westerners are wrong
Action - indigenous peoples knows better
Result - now my daughter is perfect
...Hmmm. Is *everything* elsewhere really so *Rosie*?
...Wouldn't it have been worthwhile to explore *any* benefits of the western approach?
...Or is it really all so black and white?
2) I've heard a criticism that since descriptions read as culturally appropriative. Personally that does not resonate (though that charge should be assessed by members of the cultures she elevates, and not by nice white parents like me). As I parent trying my best, I will continue to unapologetically adopt parenting best practices any where I can find them.
If the author has a blind spot here, I feel it's that many of these lessons could've been learned much closer to home. At any point in this book, I would've liked to have heard the author positively connect far-flung practices with those practiced (by some if not by all) in her own backyard.

What do you do with a little kid who...won't brush her teeth...screams in his car seat...pinches the baby...refuses to eat vegetables...runs rampant in the supermarket? Organized according to common challenges and conflicts, this book is an essential emergency first-aid manual of communication strategies, including a chapter that addresses the special needs of children with sensory processing and autism spectrum disorders.

The message is great but the narration and writing style cringey

Good Parenting >>> Great Parenting

We've got a pretty reasonable kiddo, thanks to a decent parenting repertoire. This book took my parenting game to another level, and I'm having my partner and grands read it for consistency. Thanks to the realistic, affirming tone, everyone's on board!
I like that you can pick it up anywhere for another pass whenever I need.

I listened to it twice on regular speed. a lot of very intuitive content here, punctuated by things I'd never considered.

Talking about race means naming the reality of white privilege and hierarchy. How do we talk about race honestly, then, without making our children feel bad about being white? Most importantly, how do we do any of this in age-appropriate ways? While a great deal of public discussion exists in regard to the impact of race and racism on children of color, meaningful dialogue about and resources for understanding the impact of race on white children are woefully absent. Raising White Kids steps into that void.

Audiobook hits the right tone
Revisado: 04-16-21
Early chapters seemed rudimentary, but proved to be necessary scaffolding for later concepts.
I'm thankful to have read this book now, and it'll be useful in both parenting during these crucial conversations, my own reflections, and how I engage other community stakeholders.
