Historia
The Malazan Empire simmers with discontent, bled dry by interminable warfare, bitter infighting and bloody confrontations with the formidable Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, ancient and implacable sorcerers. Even the imperial legions, long inured to the bloodshed, yearn for some respite. Yet Empress Laseen's rule remains absolute, enforced by her dread Claw assassins.

Wild Dry Fantasy (BrettD Review)
Revisado: 02-20-25
This story is unique among the fantasy series I have read until now due to its wild ideas: flying castle, possessed puppet, sword to another dimension, direct god interactions, etc. Those are fun and a positive for me. On the flip side, I find the character development and general story presentation extremely dry. I hear this first book has a different writing style than the rest, and that gives me hope. I will continue on and find out. This review will be raised if things come together better in the later books.

Historia
For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Pleasantly Surprised (BrettD Review)
Revisado: 12-10-24
When I first heard about the Mistborn trilogy, I thought "that's a silly concept". After several years and multiple repeat recommendations I finally gave it a go. I was pleasantly surprised. I still find the magic system a little silly in concept, but I think it does what any good magic system should: provide limitations. The best fantasy novels are those with limited magic systems. If anything is possible, then every obstacle has a perfect cheat code. I found myself more interested in the characters than the magic. The character(s) development and arc(s) are great.
I give this 4 stars because I think other works by Sanderson are 5 stars.

Historia
A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

Not for me (BrettD Review)
Revisado: 10-31-24
This was my first venture into Neil Gaiman writing. I bounced off of this hard. Which surprised me due to my enjoyment of similar books (such as the Dresden Files). Perhaps it was the presentation of magic/supernatural without justifications. Based on the podcast interview at the end, I am sure others will enjoy Neil's writing and this book. Overall not for me.

Historia
Forty thousand years ago, humanity fled a dying Earth. Traveling in massive arkships, these brave pioneers spread out across the galaxy to find a new home. After traveling thousands of light-years, one fleet of arkships arrived at Centauri, a dense cluster of stars with a vast array of potentially habitable planets. The survivors of Earth signaled to the remaining arkships that humanity had finally found its new home among the stars.

Excellent New Universe (BrettD Review)
Revisado: 10-31-24
Hamilton does it again! He continues to be at the top of the scifi genre. I was somewhat skeptical going into this novel due to its video game connection. I am not an RPG player. However, this may be the tie in that converts me. I can't wait for the next book and I want to experience this universe first hand in the video game. The plot is detailed and well planned. It requires attention to political hierarchies, history, and actions. The payoff is definitively worth it.

Straight Forward, Age Appropriate (BrettD Review)
Revisado: 09-11-24
Hamilton does a good job of wrapping things up nicely (as he normally does). The story is generally straight forward and predictable. The language and descriptions are well done to tone it down (both violence and science) for the target audience. If I were a teen finding these stories, I would love them. At my current age, I find these entertaining and good recruitment novels for science fiction.

Historia
With the help of a command AI, the hole in the Daedalus has been fixed by Hazel and her friends. But in the process, they have antagonized the Yi, the aliens who are actually controlling the Daedalus. After a daring escape from the Yi, Hazel and her friends now must convince the people of the Daedalus villages and the village leaders that the Yi exist - and that they must fight back in order to survive. This proves tricky, as those in power don't want their authority challenged.

Still Cruising (BrettD Review)
Revisado: 09-06-24
The arc ship is still cruising and so is the story. I think this is a decent story and good entry point for young adult readers trying science fiction. I will continue on for a more detailed review at the end of the trilogy.

Sixteen-year old Hazel lives in the Daedalus, a starship that is flying in search of a new world. The ship has been traveling for 500 years, searching for a world to settle in after having to abandon its last world. Everyone on board Daedalus lives a very simple existence in farming villages. The age of machines supplying their needs was lost during a mutiny 500 years ago.

SciFi Recruiting (BrettD Review)
Revisado: 08-28-24
Peter F Hamilton is one of my favorite authors. This is a departure from his normal high level science fiction targeting young adult readers. At my stage in life this isn't as good as his other novels. BUT! If I had read this as a teenager, I know I would have loved it. In my opinion science fiction is the greatest genre of literature and I wish more people enjoyed it. I think Hamilton is trying to recruit new young readers to experience the greatness his bibliography and the genre provides. I hope he succeeds. In the meantime, I am onto book two.

Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

Pulitzer Strike Three (BrettD review)
Revisado: 08-28-24
I can see why people like this book. It has an unusual structure and subject matter. I found it educational and entertaining (just entertaining enough for me to finish the book and not return it). The writing style is the type that gets English teachers excited, but not me. If you are a classic literature type reader, you will likely find this novel profound. If you are like me and hoping for a more cohesive climactic story arc, look elsewhere. This is the 3rd Pulitzer Novel I have read/listened to and they never live up to the hype and prestige. However, now I can use that award as an indicator to save money and credits.

Historia
It's been 10 years since Handry was wrenched away from his family and friends, forced to wander a world he no longer understood. But with the help of the Ancients, he has cobbled together a life, of sorts, for himself and his fellow outcasts. Wandering from village to village, welcoming the folk that the townships abandon, fighting the monsters the villagers cannot - or dare not - his ever-growing band of misfits has become the stuff of legend, a story told by parents to keep unruly children in line.

Lost Me (BrettD Review)

This one completely lost my attention. Because the book was 4 hours, I trudged on to finish it. The first book had a lot of promise and is worth the listen. This one not so much (or at least not for me).

Quick and Easy (BrettD review)
Revisado: 07-22-24
I was able to pick this up for free from the Audible plus catalog. This story was very easy to listen to in a couple days. With the quick timeline and the best pricetag, this is well worth a listen. The sequel (and conclusion I think) is also free.
