Historia
It's 1883. Thaniel Steepleton returns home to his tiny London apartment to find a gold pocket watch on his pillow. Six months later the mysterious timepiece saves his life, drawing him away from a blast that destroys Scotland Yard. At last he goes in search of its maker, Keita Mori, a kind, lonely immigrant from Japan. Although Mori seems harmless, a chain of unexplainable events soon suggests he must be hiding something.

Charming
Revisado: 03-29-22
Incredibly charming writing. Characters with pleasing depth. Cool automaton octopus. Xenophobia period appropriate. A sensible chuckle delivered on a regular basis.

Grinning like an idiot
Revisado: 05-31-19
A slow ramp-up to a recently well worn genre, the execution and characterization in this story are top notch. The plot moves slowly and steadily without any self indulgent wallows. All three primary characters shine in their own right.
To be candid, the tale had me grinning like an idiot at the emotionally quirky, yet perfectly authentic moments in this pitch perfect universe. The power of this story is it's restraint, the joy in its all-too-human superheroes.
More please.

conflicted
Revisado: 10-16-18
Fun premise, often feels like we're being forced to attend tedious board meetings with the characters.

Elegant parallels
Revisado: 06-13-18
Engaging from start to finish Jerry Merritt does it again. Like his last book there's a point where it seems that two sets of story points have wandered too far afield to ever meet up again and then he does his writerly magic and brings it on home to a satisfying and emotionally compelling conclusion.

So much good.
Revisado: 06-05-18
Wish fulfillment, science fiction, coming-of-age, time travel, romance, all present and accounted for. The first two sections of the book were profoundly good, the later middle section almost feels like a departure but if you stick with it to the end it all pays off handsomely. Jerry Merritt, I am now fan!

The Empire Strikes Back at the Bobiverse
Revisado: 05-15-17
Any additional comments?
Using all of the energy and comedic aplomb of the first book, FWAM captures lightning in a bottle a second time. Minor spoiler, be prepared for this second tome to imitate the structure of Empire in the sense that, rather than telling a complete story with a satisfying arc, this is the middle bit where setbacks accrue, the darkness gets darker and we leave the stage further behind than when we took it. All that being said, more please!
