Historia
"When I say, therefore, that [my brother] has better powers of observation than I...I am speaking the exact and literal truth." (Sherlock Holmes). This story occurs when Mycroft, an athletic Cambridge graduate, assists the secretary of State. He becomes embroiled in a mystery in Trinidad based on actual history. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a huge Holmesian, seven-foot-two tall, basketball's all-time leading scorer, and a US cultural ambassador. Anna Waterhouse is a professional screenwriter and script consultant.

Some parts strain credibility to breaking point
Revisado: 05-25-22
I liked the first book. This one, not so much on the story. The narration is exceptionally good for both volumes.
I'm open to variations on the original Holmes characters, and I think the addition of Cyrus Douglass was excellent. In fact, I think the insights into Cyrus's position in society are much more interesting than Mycroft.
Not wanting to give too much of the plot away, I found Mycroft's fiancee's behavior and excuses very self-serving, which makes her eventual choice incompatible with her years long deceit.
I know there's a tradition of heroes having exceptional willpower which overcomes normal physical weakness, but Mycroft is so sick he has nothing to eat and little to drink for over a week, then gets severely beat up, then essentially sleeps for a few more days with a little food and water... and then goes gadding about town tracking down the bad guys before stopping for a snack. This just stretched my credibility to the breaking point. Obviously neither of the authors has ever been really seasick. Ever. Especially not credible because the cause of all his woes could have simply just eluded him instead of going to a lot of trouble.
For me, the wonderfully described details of the era and the insight to the thinking and attitudes of the age (which are sometimes uncomfortably familiar today) are more interesting than the intricate plot and superhuman physical feats. I wish the authors would stop trying so hard and step back a bit so the characters can think and act for themselves.

For the first time, scientists could have the knowledge to prevent a natural disaster epic in scale - an asteroid hitting the Earth - and in this exciting, adventuresome book, Carrie Nugent explains how.

I enjoyed everything about this book-- the stories, the knowledge, the insights, and the voice of the author.
