Still pretty good despite

I feel bad for the narrator because that will be what is above his headstone... pretty good despite. Yes, his audio quality kind of sucks, and it’s kind of weird having someone else to finish out a series, but overall I think he did a good job! The writer kept constant which was great, but I could tell the narrator at least did his homework and tried to keep the tempo and the characters, so if you ignore the obvious and ever present sound issue, then you can almost forget it’s someone else. Almost.

Fantastic

I love the dynamic between the author and the narrator. The author has an incredible way of making the unbelievable real with detail that paints the picture in my mind. Slow and steady he sets up the scene, then plunged into battle like a plunge of the sword. The narrators use of pace and voice control has just as much to do with creating the story as the author.

It’s fantastic.

All I’m going to say is the story might have potential. I can’t tell you exactly how much potential because I couldn’t get past 15 minutes of that terrible... terrible voice.

Just... bad

Poorly written. The performance wasn’t all the voice actor. If they had some lines that weren’t nonessential. The writer goes out of their way to try to use phrases to prove their intelligence but fail to demonstrate that intelligence anywhere else in the writing. Plot had some potential unfortunately.

Skeleton. Has potential.

I don’t know... I got about three chapters in before the I made up my mind the character. However much science you shoved in there to make him seem intelligent, was an idiot. All that means is the author is not really connected to the characters. Sure, you made a plot, you put the skeleton of the mono myth in there... but then it’s like shoved as much drama into this guys responses to make him seem like he’s the good guy because you needed to fill some blank space with his long and dramatic “Nooo!” scene rather than any substance about action. Oh, I don’t even want to get to a large complex battle scene with how much he mangled to first scene of him trying to open the door for a couple minutes to drag on the fruitless endeavor of trying to unlock a door that’s been shut from containment, for which he seems to know about every ship function other the fact that he can’t open a door! I think that’s where I sank off this boat.

Has American Exit Strategy turned you off from other books in this genre?

I generally like end of the world type books, however he in-discretely pushes all of the "The world is against Christians" conspiracies.

This was a good book. Good performance. Some of the writing could have been better, but the writer seems promising.

No Depth

The characters literally have no depth. Oh, they have cursory personalities, but the level of those personalities could have been developed on a character sheet in D&D. Don't forget that my character knows everything your character knows and a little: "gee, that spaceship is hundreds of kilometers away, but I the non-space war specialist postulate that there is sabotage AND a mutiny happening aboard that ship!" Low and behold, though we already knew this, it was occurring in just the right fashion to ensure no casualties whatsoever.

Worst. Writer. Ever. I slogged through just to see how he was going to punch the next plot hole in the face.

Best. Ever.

This has got to be the shortest book I've listened to, but it packed in more of a story than some longer books. This was a masterpiece. If I were Scalzi and Quinto, I'd be patting myself on the back.
