Historia
Leaving behind friends, family, and life as they know it, the Wards embark on a journey into the Alaskan wilderness that will change them forever. Winds of Skilak traces a young couple’s adventurous move from the suburbs of Ohio to a remote island on ill-tempered Skilak Lake. As Sam and Bonnie adapt to a life without running water, electricity, and telephones, the unforgiving, desolate environment tests their courage early on.

Worst Narrator Ever
Revisado: 02-26-24
I love stories of adventure and expedition. This one was unfortunately not one of the better ones. Inclusive of details that were uninteresting and should have been omitted. The main character is a clearly subservient, maybe even helpless woman who seems just willfully along for the ride and without any independent personality whatsoever.
Worst of all, though. Is the absolutely excruciatingly painful experience of listening to this narrator. It’s so bad it has got to be intentional. Who would possibly allow their book to be ruined by the nasal, exaggerated, dramatic, dragged-out, accent and performance riddled with mispronunciations? I had to stop the book several times out of mere annoyance with having to listen to her. This might have been somewhat endurable as a book without her. Barely. But with this narrative? Unbearable.

Historia
Within FBI field operative circles, groups of people known as “Special” by their titles alone, Michael R. McGowan is an outlier. Over the course of his career, McGowan has worked more than 50 undercover cases. In this extraordinary and unprecedented book, McGowan will take listeners through some of his biggest cases, from international drug busts to the Russian and Italian mobs to biker gangs and contract killers to corrupt unions and SWAT work. Ghost is an unparalleled view into how the FBI, through the courage of its undercover Special Agents, nails the bad guys.

Bad audio, bad narration, bad story. Save your money.
Revisado: 01-15-19
Audio: The audio was extremely hollow in sound and had to be turned up loud to hear. Very poor recording job.
Narration: I’m guessing they chose the narrator because his raspy voice added to the “tough guy” persona that the author is clearly in love with, but it was serious hard to listen to without feeling like I, too, would get a sore throat. Coupled with the really poor recording quality, it made for a miserable listening experience.
Story: I lost count of the number of times I rolled my eyes. Here’s a quick synopsis of the story from the author’s perspective: “I’m the toughest and smartest guy who ever lived. I singlehandedly foiled every one of the most dangerous criminals in US history despite the incompetence of FBI management. I’ll say a few things that try to make you think I’m being humble but it’s hard to conceal this much awesomeness.”
Oftentimes I wondered whether anyone edited this book. There are frequent errors in the usage of the English language (words that don’t mean what the author thinks they mean), and the stories are very choppy and abrupt. At best.
Save your money.

Historia
Jim Nicholson was one of the CIA's top veteran case officers. By day he taught spycraft at the CIA's clandestine training center, The Farm. By night he was a minivan-driving single father racing home to have dinner with his kids. But Nicholson led a double life. For more than two years, he had met covertly with agents of Russia's foreign intelligence service and turned over troves of classified documents. In 1997 Nicholson became the highest-ranking CIA officer ever convicted of espionage.

Thorough and excellent account
Revisado: 04-25-17
The author does a masterful job of weaving the several strands of this complex story and all its characters together in a manner that enables the reader to effortlessly visualize the unfolding storyline. Furthermore, Mr. Denson does an exceptional job at defining and making accessible to the average reader the relevant aspects of the shadowy and largely unknown world of espionage and counterespionage in a manner that is informative, yet not overwhelming. A truly excellent job of storytelling. The narration, too, was quite good - enhancing the already fascinating and well-constructed underlying written work. Highly recommended.

Historia
Ruth Wariner was the 39th of her father's 42 children. Growing up on a farm in rural Mexico, where authorities turned a blind eye to the practices of her community, Ruth lives in a ramshackle house without indoor plumbing or electricity. At church, preachers teach that God will punish the wicked by destroying the world and that women can ascend to heaven only by entering into polygamous marriages and giving birth to as many children as possible.

Better than Ambien
Revisado: 01-10-16
Unbelievably boring. Incredibly slow to develop (does it ever really develop?) and the narration is equally painful. I've had to rewind about a dozen times because there is no plot line to even try and grasp, and my mind incessantly wanders. This stream-of-consciousness, monotone, non-story became, essentially, nothing more than background noise that killed me to sleep.
