Historia
North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an "American" or "Canadian" culture, but rather into one of the 11 distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent....

Recording is hard to hear
Revisado: 06-17-23
I suspect the recording has been made in such away that effects how difficult it is to hear the readers breathy bedside-tone of delivery. This reading of American Nations is impossible to hear in environments that are NOT perfectly quiet. I imagine this 2011 recording would benefit from noise cancelling head phones. The shushed caring/sensitive quality of the reader is odd and gives this recording a lullaby quality which clashes with the very specific journalistic rapid delivery of specifics, details and data.
The content is insightful, interesting and well organized. Leaving the listener with a clear, understandable and grounded view of the peoples and regions that constitute North America.
So much has happened since 2011 one wishes for the book to include up to post pandemic time.
Here is to hoping for an updated version of the book with a new recording with a new reader.

Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

New life to the patriarchal story of history
Revisado: 05-26-21
In this book Sapiens I found an underlying assumption of reinforcing of the age old opinions of the male human being’s domination story of himself and all the world he named himself.
I suggest rather than merely reading/listening to this story by N Harari also(or in place of this) read/listen to The Dawn Of Everything by David Graeber(Anthropologist) and David Wengrow (Archaeologist). There work incorporates the recent 30 years of data collected in their fields of study and turns the old story over and over revealing the gaps in evidence/data. The book up ends most of what was assumed to be truth.

An evening of readings and discussion: Heller's friends and colleagues including Christopher Buckley, Robert Gottlieb and Mike Nichols, revisit his classic black comedy set at the end of WWII, one of the most important books about patriotism, honor, the absurdities of war and beauracracy of the twentieth century. The conversation is led by Lesley Stahl. An excerpt is performed by Scott Shepherd (Gatz). "The rock and roll of novels...There's no book like it." (Norman Mailer)

This is NOT AN AUDIOBOOK

This is NOT a version of the audio book but its great!
Revisado: 07-04-18
I loved hearing from the original editor of the book and Mike Nichols! This is a live Interview with people who knew Joseph Heller. An Actor reads the opening with some hick-ups but a nice voice... this whole recording is a celebration and a wee insight into the exceptional and controversial book “A Catch 22”.
