Historia
Cece is in love. She has arrived early at her in-laws’ beautiful lake house in Salish, Montana, to finish planning her wedding to Charlie, a medical student with a brilliant future. Charlie asks Garrett, his best friend from college, to officiate, though Cece can’t imagine anyone less appropriate for the task; Garrett doesn’t believe in love, much less marriage. But as she spends time with Garrett, and his gruff mask slips, her long-held expectations for her life with Charlie begin to crumble, her feelings for Garrett—haunted by a tragic event from his past—become impossible to bury.

God this was depressing
Revisado: 03-13-25
Some of the writing is lovely- the author really does capture the human condition, existential dread, the difficulty of finding purpose and meaning. But. The grim vision of the future - regardless of how likely it might be - was almost too hard to bear. Worth the time but you may be really blue.

Great story, well told. Any young woman who doesn’t appreciate the equality women have achieved will understand how far we have come.

It is spring 1919, and John Sawtelle’s imagination has gotten him into trouble … again. Now John and his newlywed wife, Mary, along with their two best friends and their three dogs, are setting off for Wisconsin’s northwoods, where they hope to make a fresh start—and, with a little luck, discover what it takes to live a life of meaning, purpose and adventure. Must Love Dogs
Revisado: 02-18-25
I loved this book. It goes off roading in some interesting ways that feel random, but aren’t. I do think that people who don’t get dogs, and love them may be sustained by the great writing, and deeply human characters but might not be as engaged as dog lovers. Loved the narration- so well done. This book will be on my top 10 for the year.

Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

Historia
On July 12th, 1776, Captain James Cook, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later, on a beach on the island of Hawaii, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, come to that fatal moment? Hampton Sides’ bravura account of Cook’s last journey both wrestles with Cook’s legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration.

Revisado: 12-17-24
Well written, with lots of detail, helps to understand what the world was like in the times. Felt like I got to know Captain Cook, why he was such a big deal, and finally understood what the heck happened to him. People were a lot tougher back then, that’s for sure.

Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can't shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot. Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He's charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet. Then the brutal murder of a young woman—the latest in a string of deaths across the coast—confounds police. The primary suspect? A mystery man who dates his victims before he kills them.

Trying not to be mean
Revisado: 12-14-24
I have a theory that when authors break through and sell books based on their name recognition, that editors just stop worrying about quality and let them throw out pretty much anything. I have seen it again and again. This had some promise - but the author failed utterly to flesh it out. This book felt like it was a first draft, and could have used another couple of revisions and additional effort helping us get to know the characters, and make them come to life. No one cares about anything… they have no hobbies, no interests, they are self obsessed and don’t care about anyone but themselves. There is not a single thing to like about any of the people in this book. They were pencil sketches of stereotypes, one dimensional and without any redeeming value. I stayed because of the promised twist, which was indeed a surprise, but did not make up for the poor writing. The narration did not improve the experience either. I wish I could take back the time I wasted listening to this book. I wish that successful authors would stop churning out dreck, and have a little self respect, take more time, and maintain their standards.

High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she’s built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage—and hoping that boredom won’t kill her before the cancer does.

Not Good - only stayed with it to find out what happened.
Revisado: 12-01-24
There seems to be a fad for stories in which deeply traumatized professionals are put in situations that trigger their unresolved issues. It is a tired and tedious trope. Then, the constant drumbeat of terror, boy did that get old- the feeling in the house. Repetitive and predictable. All the weakness of the writing is exposed when read aloud by the breathless and melodramatic narrator. Just annoying.

Historia
On a secluded bluff overlooking the ocean sits a Victorian house, lavender with gingerbread trim, a home that contains a century’s worth of secrets. By the time Jane Flanagan discovers the house as a teenager, it has long been abandoned. The place is an irresistible mystery to Jane. There are still clothes in the closets, marbles rolling across the floors, and dishes in the cupboards, even though no one has set foot there in decades. The house becomes a hideaway for Jane, a place to escape her volatile mother.

Decent Storytelling
Revisado: 11-24-24
Cassandra Campbell is another of a small group of audio book readers whose mannerisms grate on me. I usually just skip a book if she is reading now, but forgot to check. There are some lovely elements to this book, nice ties between past and present. I couldn’t help feeling (once again) that the authors political views were being crammed down my throat. I do wish authors would trust us to think for ourselves and not think it is their job to improve their readers morals and values.

Historia
In the spring of 1972, twelve-year-old Tomoko leaves her mother behind in Tokyo and boards a train alone for Ashiya, a coastal town in Japan, to stay with her aunt’s family. Tomoko’s aunt is an enigma and an outlier in her working-class family, and her magnificent home—and handsome foreign husband, the president of a soft drink company—are symbols of that status. The seventeen rooms are filled with German-made furnishings; there are sprawling gardens and even an old zoo where the family’s pygmy hippopotamus resides.

Not a Page Turner
Revisado: 11-24-24
It is something to see the world through the eyes of a young girl. The details about culture, time and place paint a picture I will keep with me. The narrator sounds like she has cotton balls in her mouth, but I ended up warming to her odd speech patterns. Worth the listen, but this is real literature, not written to keep you on the edge of your seat.
