Diving into a revolutionary new video game, Marcus and his friends escape a stagnant society, entering into a world that defies their wildest imaginations. But from the moment that he logs in, Marcus finds himself separated from his friends and thrown into a remote village under attack by a horde of goblins. Forced into battle, Marcus rallies the beleaguered villagers and, with their help, manages to drive off the invading creatures. With the village in ruins and their supplies spoiled, the villagers turn to Marcus for help in rebuilding the village.

Great LitRPG
Revisado: 01-02-19
Audible kept recommending this book to me and I'm so glad that I bought it. The LitRPG genre can have some real duds, but this book manages to have a great story while still including elements that have become synonymous with LitRPGs. I love how the line between the game and reality starts to blur. I like how the book touches on how the virtual world affects the real world in ways that are a bit more realistic than the Play to Live series. The characters are like-able and the good guys don't win every battle but they always win the war. Halfway through this book I purchased the followup book.

A very different tone
Revisado: 09-24-18
I love the Expanse series. It was interesting reading this book as it is set much farther in the future. I found it hard to get into it initially because of the changed circumstances of the main characters and the different timeframe from the previous books. However, I think that the jump in time was a necessary and beneficial step to move the series along towards another meaningful narrative. It also feels more realistic that the main characters would have been able to go 30 years between the last novel and this one without being in any major humanity threatening events.

A happy ending to tie up this trilogy
Revisado: 09-24-18
I found the ending satisfying but also sort of predictable. I'm glad the author stuck to three books instead of trying to stretch it out.

A solid sequel to an intersting alt-history
Revisado: 09-24-18
I like the alternative history near future civil war America setting. I feel like the characters are a little one dimensional, but it doesn't take away from the great story and atmosphere.

Historia
United Nations Special Operations Command sent an elite expeditionary force of soldiers and pilots out on a simple recon mission, and somehow along the way they sparked an alien civil war. Now the not-at-all-merry band of pirates is in desperate trouble, again. Their stolen alien starship is falling apart, thousands of light years from home. The ancient alien AI they nicknamed Skippy is apparently dead, and even if they can by some miracle revive him, he might never be the same.

I love the introspective but condescending nature of this series that examines the often overlooked mechanics of what a fantasy dungeon crawling hero socioeconomic system would look like.

Historia
Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise and he's going to keep it; taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. He doesn't agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool's errand he doesn't expect to ever return from. At least, this time, the Earth is safe, right? Not so much.
