Historia
Tadeusz Borowski’s concentration camp stories were based on his own experiences surviving Auschwitz and Dachau. In spare, brutal prose he describes a world where where the will to survive overrides compassion, and prisoners eat, work, and sleep a few yards from where others are murdered; where the difference between human beings is reduced to a second bowl of soup, an extra blanket, or the luxury of a pair of shoes with thick soles; and where the line between normality and abnormality vanishes.

Top book on subject
Revisado: 11-19-24
I read this book in 1987 while on a train to Auschwitz while I was in college. I was on my way to visit my dead ancestors. I recall the book being beautifully written, despite its grim topic. I thought of the book recently, 40 years later, and listened to it on audible. I’m glad I did. It reminded me of the countless people I met in my youth who lived through the second world war. They soon will be gone but this book will remain when I too turn to dust.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Rubbish
Revisado: 10-22-20
Abject nonsense. This book’s premise is evil white people uniquely subjugated the world while the author ignores the universal practice of slavery and discrimination. It’s pathetic.

Mad Mike’s voice and words of a lost cause
Revisado: 08-06-19
As Nike Hoare celebrates his 100th birthday, his efforts might fade into the past but for this well told story of the mercenary role in the Congo War. Hoare’ five commando seems to be the historical bridge between the French Foreign. Legion and Blackwater. Hoare’s commandos were more like the Legion in that they engaged in real combat with the objective of holding territory unlike today’s contractors who provide security and do search an destroy missions. Interesting listen.
