Historia
Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Gripping, massive story
Revisado: 03-28-24
Mr Herbert’s use of allusion to give us glimpses of the world he created leaves you wanting to know more about every aspect of the story—the titles of royals of names of rites are just familiar enough to tip your mind off to entire, unknown back stories and histories. A truly delicious read.
Performance is top notch. Some characters shift voices even within interactions. While she shifts are certainly intentional, the subtleties that guided the changes were beyond me. Still fantastic!

Historia
Pak Jun Do is the haunted son of a lost mother - a singer “stolen” to Pyongyang - and an influential father who runs Long Tomorrows, a work camp for orphans. There the boy is given his first taste of power, picking which orphans eat first and which will be lent out for manual labor. Recognized for his loyalty and keen instincts, Jun Do comes to the attention of superiors in the state, rises in the ranks, and starts on a road from which there will be no return.

Hauntingly good
Revisado: 08-20-20
I’ve listened to this book six times, and I love it every time. Its funniest quotes are dark and unlikely. I draw on the book to soothe my son when he’s afraid in the dark, to reframe my perspective on being free when I don’t understand someone’s viewpoint, and when I need a great cry. Read it, then read it over and over again. Language precludes this from being read out loud when others are around, though.

Historia
“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.” So begins one of the most beloved hymns of all time. This is the autobiography of the man who penned those words. John Newton, the self-proclaimed “wretch”,was an active slave trader for several years until, on a homeward voyage through a violent storm, he experienced what he was later to refer to as his “great deliverance.” He tells of the dramatic, real-life events that led him from sin and bondage to a life transformed by God’s grace.

Amazing Grace--not featured
Revisado: 06-07-17
John Newton's transformation from sinner to Christian is inspiring and comforting, and God's grace towards him is truly amazing. That said, those looking for an account of his writing Amazing Grace or doing anything to abolish the slave trade should look elsewhere. Outstanding performance.
