The story kept me guessing the whole time in terms of the number of crimes and who perpetrated them. And there were so many relationships in the story that were strained in one way or another, making all the dialog more interesting as the story unfolded. And Richard Armitage’s portrayal of the characters was flawless!

I was thoroughly engaged with this story from beginning to end. I have long enjoyed the Hercule Poirot mysteries, but had not encountered this one. It had me stumped all the way through to the very end. And Richard Armitage’s rendition of all the characters was perfection!! He switched so quickly and perfectly from Doctor Shepherd’s British accent to Hercule Poirot’s Belgian accent that you would swear that there were multiple actors reading the parts. I loved this so much I am planning to hunt for more in the series to listen to next! If you love mysteries I urge you to give this one a listen.

This story is all about the importance of good parenting and what happens if it is not there in a child’s life and how it affects them as adults. I have listened to it twice now and really enjoyed the complex story, how the author weaves the theme throughout the back story of many characters (illustrating the positive and negative results of good parenting), and the wonderful performance by Richard Armitage. Note: The story is not fully resolved in this book. Resolution comes in Joy Ellis’ later novel, The Patient Man. I recommend them both!!

I have enjoyed watching Poirot mysteries on TV but was unsure how it would be to listen to them. This collection includes a wonderful variety of mysteries that had me totally stumped. I must not have many brain cells, a malady I share with poor Hastings!! Richard Armitage narrated these mysteries beautifully, switching easily between Poirot’s and Hastings’ totally different accents. And his deep, rich voice is delightful to listen to. All in all, a great experience!

I was searching for books narrated by Richard Armitage, having loved his performance in Joy Ellis’ Jackman and Evans series. I saw this book that he had written as well as narrated and had to give it a try. It took a bit of time to get used to the different writing style and multiple narrators, but I quickly grew to love his character development, descriptive style, and ability to create suspense and reader involvement. Toward the end I was so invested in the story and the suspense that I was talking back to the characters, who speak in the first person to the listener. I also enjoyed the medical science theme of the story, including the focus on the ethics (or lack of them) in the medical field today. All around a great book and a fantastic performance from the narrators. Congratulations to Richard Armitage on a great first novel!!

Story of how love can hurt and heal

This book is about love between partners, family and friends, and how it can potentially destroy people when it is obsessive or too possessive, and how it can protect, nourish and help heal when it is generous and compassionate. Joy Ellis takes advantage of her regular characters to demonstrate the bonds that develop between co-workers, friends and families and how they can sustain one another in times of extreme stress. In addition she uses the victims to show how they can rise up out of their fear to help and support one another, creating meaningful friendships. The perpetrators of the crimes illustrate the damage that can occur when love is unhealthy or absent. There is plenty of procedural crime solving too, but the magic is in the characters and their connections to one another, and the stellar performance, as always, by Richard Armitage, with his incredible voice and wonderful acting and accent skills.

Story about what is really important in life

This story shows the humanity and goodness in people who are marginalized in society due to poverty, sexual orientation or lack of education or higher intelligence, and the potential for tragic damage that can occur among people who are born to wealth and privilege but are abused or neglected. It makes you realize just how important loving one another really is - not just romantic or familial love, but also love of “the other”. I love this series of books because the main characters are compassionate, caring human beings who happen to be in law enforcement. They support one another and do their best to support the public they serve.

I thoroughly enjoy the two lead detectives (Jackman and Evans). They are hard working, dedicated and intuitive, as well as compassionate and kind hearted. The story turns out to be complex and tragic, but also has some good outcomes thanks to the hard work and team effort of Jackman’s team. Richard Armitage’s narration is a joy to listen to. What a voice!! This is the second Joy Ellis story I have listened to, and I am looking forward to listening to more.

The heart of the story takes some time to be revealed, which heightens your interest. And the story is very relevant to a potential future of current events, making it highly engaging. The acting is excellent. I particularly loved Edward Bluemel, whom I thoroughly enjoyed in the Discovery of Witches TV series. His British accent and sweet disposition make him a delight to listen to. I hope that they develop a Season 2 of this story, and again feature Edward Bluemel!!
