Historia
In South Korea in the 1980s, young Eunju and her mother are homeless on the street. After being captured by the police, they’re sent to live within the walls of a state-sanctioned reformatory center that claims to rehabilitate the nation’s citizens but hides a darker, more violent reality.

I gave up.
Revisado: 08-26-24
I think this might be a great book to read, where you can see the words on the page, but I struggled to get through even a third listening. Too many Korean names and words that the narrator did little to distinguish. They all ran together, and I could not keep track. The story has potential, but unfortunately, I was too frustrated to keep going.

The acclaimed author of American Dirt reveals the devastating effects of a shocking tragedy in this landmark true-crime work - the first ever to look intimately at the experiences of both the victims and their families. A Rip in Heaven is Jeanine Cummins’ story of a night in April, 1991, when her two cousins Julie and Robin Kerry, and her brother, Tom, were assaulted on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River just outside of St. Louis.

Can't get it out of my head.
Revisado: 08-26-24
Not the most outstanding writing or narrating, but the story is earnest and significant. I would recommend, as it is also a commentary on our culture, without sounding like a commentary. It is a description of the events of a brutal crime, told from the victims' family perspective, and beckons you evaluate your points of view on criminal punishments.

Historia
It is three in the morning when Bobby Western plunges from the Coast Guard tender into darkness. His dive light illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair floating, eyes devoid of speculation. Missing from the site are the pilot’s bag, the plane’s black box, and the tenth passenger. A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit—by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul.

Revisado: 11-17-22
Maybe I'm not philosophical enough? Or maybe I'm just too average, because I don't get it. And decided going beyond two hours was not worth the brain cells required to sort through the mess. I'm sorry Julia Whelan...I typically love all the stories you narrate.

Can't get through the amateur narration
Revisado: 10-12-22
While the writing might not be too poor, the narrating is. Initially, it wasn't too bad, but I just can't get through the silly mispronunciations and amateur characterizations, and it's not worth another 9 hours of my life. Sadly, I could not finish this listen.

Struggled with narration
Revisado: 10-29-21
For such a seasoned actor I expected better narration. It was as if she was reading. There was virtually no change in voice for different characters. I found myself going back a lot to re-listen. But the story was Grisham-good.

Couldn't finish it
Revisado: 10-16-18
I'm so sad, because I've always counted on Jodi Picoult novels. i didn't even wait for reviews to buy, but there are too many characters in reverse order. Too confusing. I love how her stories make me consider multiple points of view, and there was a bit of this, but without finishing the book, I'm left disappointed. However, I couldn't bare another 7 audible hours.

Decent listen. Twists and turns. Ends abruptly and makes you wonder how it will wrap up, but I prefer that to a 10-minute finale with all the Ts crossed and Is dotted.

Historia
Eva never really wanted to be a mother - and certainly not the mother of a boy who ends up murdering seven of his fellow high school students, a cafeteria worker, and a much-adored teacher who tried to befriend him, all two days before his 16th birthday. Now, two years later, it is time for her to come to terms with marriage, career, family, parenthood, and Kevin’s horrific rampage, in a series of startlingly direct correspondences with her estranged husband, Franklin.

long but good ending
Revisado: 08-20-18
Yikes, didn't see that coming. Such a disturbing story that's way too relevant for our times. Though very long and detailed, which makes it hard to listen to, it's worth it in the end. Get last the first few chapters and you'll want to know more. I listened at 1.05x and the narration was superb.

Struggled to finish
Revisado: 03-29-18
Maybe I've read too many similar books, but I was bored half way through. The narrator was superb, but the story was slow. The "erotic" stories were clever, but that's not what kept me listening. I finished it, though it took me forever, because of the suspense and intrigue. i wanted to know what happened, but mostly because I'd already invested 6 hours listening.
