Historia
After the final curtain of Swan Lake, an animated crowd exits the Mariinsky theatre brimming with excitement from the night's performance. But outside, the scene is somber. A ballerina's body lies face down in the snow, blood splattered like rose petals over the costume of the Swan Queen. The crowd is silenced by a single cry - "Nemetseva is dead!" When the dead ballerina's aristocratic lover comes begging for justice, Emily must apply her own set of skills to discover the rising star's murderer.

Hated to review harshly
Revisado: 06-25-24
I truly have loved Tasha Alexander. What I don’t love is the manner in which she is essentially writing two books. I almost gave up on the book about a third of the way through because the dual narratives just did not work for me. Not wanting to miss Lady Emily and her “posse,” I decided to simply skip the other narrative, the story of the Russian ballerinas, and read the straightforward tale set in the present. The continuous worked perfectly, and I was satisfied.
I don’t have cognitive difficulty with dual narratives, but it seems that integration is often the problem. When the narratives are not linked, except at the very end, as in this novel, I feel there is little art involved.
Perhaps someday I shall go back and read the Russian tale. I sincerely hope that this novel does not presage the future Lady Emily novels. This was such a disappointment.

Characterizations

Not enough back stories of major characters. Excellent “near future” descriptions. VR is not quite there, but, I hope, will be there soon. Story is well done and interesting. Jeremy Logan is quickly becoming a favorite protagonist, abJames Bond or Indiana Jones for the 31st century.

Intriguing
Revisado: 11-13-23
Excellent entry in the series. A puzzle that is fairly presented, but with interesting twists. It lacks a bit of the depth found in, say, Andrea Penrose or Deanna Rayburn, but I suspect that those details will be added as the series progresses. Excellent narration.

Good description of acquired physical disability and also the effects of trauma on the two main characters. Finding meaning, the importance of friendship and connection. The fact that not all can be saved and maybe should not be saved. An excellent entry for the series!

Just wonderful!
Revisado: 11-11-23
I felt I was reading early Jane Austin. It was also a wonderful and positive surprise to have a very intelligent heroine with a disability, clearly aged 17, and watch her grow. The other characters were also well developed and flawed without anachronistic psychologizing as to motives, etc. I shall be reading more by Georgette Heyer!

Such a joy to hear good English and learn something new each time I visit this series. It is a light during dark days and a reminder that war and conflict have always been with us, as well as the struggle for peace and stability. I am ever grateful for the values espoused and articulated alongside the adventures. Thank you Andrea Penrose and Audible!

Beautifully written and imaginatively constructed. This was a
Joy to listen to, especially after registering to Bram Stoker’s original. The spirit of the original is maintained, and there are genuinely frightening moments, building toward the terrifying epilogue. Wonderful narrative acting. Truly a masterpiece.

What a great start to a gentle and well-written series! I have read and watched how the characters have changed and evolved throughout the years and historical circumstances. Good English, good grammar and a deep insight into time and place are much appreciated. Many thanks for the effort and care given!

I am impressed and delighted with the excellence of this new series. The story is well researched and serves as a chilling prelude to the horrifying realization of eugenic in the Third Reich as well as racial and genocidal tragedies world wide, a terrible legacy we deal with today.
