Historia
Maria Bamford is a comedian’s comedian (an outsider among outsiders) and has forever fought to find a place to belong. From struggling with an eating disorder as a child of the 1980s, to navigating a career in the arts (and medical debt and psychiatric institutionalization), she has tried just about every method possible to not only be a part of the world, but to want to be a part of it. In Bamford’s “trademark blend of disarming intimacy and dark whimsy” (Publishers Weekly), Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult brings us on a quest to participate in something.

I love Maria
Revisado: 09-19-23
I have seen Maria perform at free and donation based shows all over Hollywood and the “east side.” I have watched her specials and listened to her albums. I never get tired of her! If there were an Olympic competition between Maria and her sister, WHICH I KNOW THERE IS NOT, I think the judges would score Maria higher because she brought Marilyn and Joel to the world at large, which was awesome and we miss them.

Tam Dean Burn is phenomenal
Revisado: 02-01-23
This is my second time listening to this outstanding performance. I don’t think any other actor would have put as much effort cultivating individual voices for all these characters. I have read quite a few novels by Welsh, but Trainspotting remains the goat. If you like this audiobook, listen to Skagboys next.

Historia
Admired by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, and Dashiell Hammett, and hailed as one of the best 100 English-language novels by Time magazine, The Day of the Locust continues to influence American writers, artists, and culture. Bob Dylan wrote the classic song "Day of the Locusts" in homage, and Matt Groening's Homer Simpson is named after one of its characters. No novel more perfectly captures the nuttier side of Hollywood. Here the lens is turned on its fringes-actors out of work, film extras with big dreams, and parents lining their children up for small roles.

Okay, okay, you've convinced me…
Revisado: 02-18-19
"Hollywood is shallow and artificial!!" I guess this was news to people in 1939, but now that we're 80 years into this trope, the message does get a bit-heavy handed and dull. There are really no observations here that seem particularly fresh or astute. It's not that I disagree with the author's point of view, but the whole story's only objective is to beat this long-dead horse.
Regarding the narrator, I have heard marvelous performances from Grover Gardner, but this one feels very "phoned-in."

Historia
Eight years ago Moose Malloy and cute little redhead Velma were getting married - until someone framed Malloy for armed robbery. Now his stretch is up and he wants Velma back. PI Philip Marlow meets Malloy one hot day in Hollywood and, out of the generosity of his jaded heart, agrees to help him. Dragged from one smoky bar to another, Marlowe's search for Velma turns up plenty of dangerous gangsters with a nasty habit of shooting first and talking later.

Gripping story
Revisado: 11-16-18
Roy Porter has a thousand voices! Good pacing and interpretation. However, considering all the professional nuance he gives his performances of male characters, it's kind of telling that he's so thoughtless when giving voices to female characters, like they're unworthy of depth and effort.

Historia
To all appearances, John Wilder has all the trappings of success, circa 1960: a promising career in advertising, a loving family, a beautiful apartment, even a country home. John's evenings are spent with associates at quiet Manhattan lounges and his weekends with friends at glittering cocktail parties. But something deep within this seemingly perfect life has long since gone wrong.

Not Yates' best work!
Revisado: 06-01-18
The audiobook performer seemed pretty amateur-- his vocal affectations were schlocky and embarrassing. Audible Studios must not be offering the kind of money required for good talent!

Troxell ruined story
Revisado: 05-27-18
I can't really judge this book fairly, because the audiobook narrator's presposterous performance obfuscated the author's intended tone. I'll have to read this book again, on paper, to get a better sense of what's going on here.
