Historia
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

Good story

Well performed. Written well. I felt like Clavell shortened the ending, but I like where the story and characters go.

Well performed. Written well, especially the dialogue. I wanted more action, but I liked where Clavell took the story.

Historia
Las Vegas, 1982. Brady Wilks, a teenage transplant from the Midwest, navigates life in the dusty suburban outskirts of an aberrant 24-hour town built by the Mob. Outcast as a newcomer, Brady forges a brotherly bond with an older teenage neighbor, Mick, and his friend, Brett. But when Brett unexpectedly moves away, Mick invites a new kid into their pack, squeezing out the last remnants of their childhood in favor of a new world laced with cartel-supplied drugs and the deal of a lifetime.

Like you were there
Revisado: 10-04-23
More than a period piece, Becker faithfully illustrates the power circumstances, choices and Las Vegas had on youth during the seventies and eighties. Well written and full of suspense. The story mixes real history and geography with seemingly impossible circumstances for a young delinquent underrated by family, friends, adversaries and himself. This book is for anybody who grew up with D&D, cutoffs and a few bad friends, but I would also recommend it to high school teens.

I get it now
Revisado: 08-29-23
Occasionally, I don’t understand why a sci-fi series is so universally celebrated, but I really get it with this series. Dan Simmons has a unique way to connect the reader with characters well into the story. He allows characters to be stoic, enigmatic or difficult to love. I enjoy that the story is not a simple white-hat/black-hat western. Heroism is evident in many characters and factions. The complexities of AI issues are very timely. These books provoke a thought about the upsides and downsides to deep learning technologies, prolonging life and even preserving consciousness. Not just ethics, but consequences of AI exercising its own will and ambitions in competition to humanity’s agenda. Other writers and filmmakers tackle the subject, but Simmons mashed up this concepts with faith and fate instead of sacrificing one for the other.

Honest and not over-scripted
Revisado: 05-15-23
While it’s true, the OX team has built a bit of a franchise to make a living, their content remains focused on the overlander, not manufacturers and sponsors. Great discussion that is authoritative and rooted in experience without authoritarian know-it-allness.

Historia
“I have sensed a disturbance in the Force.” Ominous words under any circumstances, but all the more so when uttered by Emperor Palpatine. On Batuu, at the edges of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root - its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. But it is troubling enough to the Imperial leader to warrant investigation by his most powerful agents: ruthless enforcer Lord Darth Vader and brilliant strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Historia
Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

This novel stands on its own
Revisado: 02-25-21
This is a terrific sci-fi with a plot and action that builds quickly and rarely takes a breather. I have read RP1 and RP2. I see the similar literary devices, and this book too is built on gaming and pop culture, but I love the uniqueness of the story and the character relationships that differ greatly from the Ready Player books. And thanks again Ernest for the Oregon references. I don’t appreciated the regular f-bombs, but I get that’s how some of these characters would speak. Barring that, I loved the story, characters and Cline’s ability to allow characters to make mistakes, mature, question narratives, build trust and cooperate.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Good food for thought
Revisado: 07-23-20
I’ve always been somewhat removed from the subject of race but I’ve always known it’s a problem. Robin shares a lot of interesting ideas and perspectives on race and how white people subconsciously view it. Though the book wasn’t a big time page turner for me, it gave me some good concepts to think about and also brought some very real and current issues that happen and take place in the world today to my mind to consider. I would recommend this book to someone who would like to be a little more educated on what racism is and how it takes place in the world we live in whether you consider yourself racist or not.
