booooooooooooooooooooooooooooring. I'm convinced someone paid someone to have this book recommended to book clubs. it's the only way it sold. in a rational world.

uncensored, but annoyingly qualified.

what an obnoxious introduction. I'm offended by that ridiculous explanation. "Hitler is bad!" I don't care. I'm trying to hear the words of Hitler, not some overly sensitive nerds. the footnotes are usually boring, unimportant and voiced with a grating tone. I do not recommend this edition.

Oprah's Bookclub Selection?

Amazing. captures the zeitgeist, well written, especially for a first book (I assume), and important. Not for the average book club because although the Abraham Lincoln quote at the end would snap some of the more centered pols back into reality, it may push some of the more eve types into an eve scenario.

A Long Wait for a Rare Display.

Chiang pens unique stories with perfect prose. This collection rivals his last. He and Jorge Luis Borges are unmatched. I waited a long time for these stories and I was not disappointed.

Boring

This book is neither art nor propaganda. It's just plain boring. He is a capable technical writer (some of the prose was above average) but the story was so inane and he really didn't capture the refugee experience very well. Not surprised. it's hard to write things you know very little about.

I wanted to hear pkd, but the editors feel the need to interject every few sentences. provide the context at the end of the chapter. the decision to interrupt the flow with such frequency resulted in a ruined audiobook.

Fight Club, but not as deep

The last half finishes strong. Similar themes to Fight Club. Prose is above average and the story is unique which makes up for the corn factor. Good but the author goes out of her way to show there is basically no difference between men and women if you take away the physical power. The nuances of physiology, genetics and evolutionary biology obviously escape her, but hey, even great writers suffer from the dunning krueger effect. It's too bad she didn't spend a few extra years learning the relevant science, because she might have instead created a masterpiece. Very talented author but she has yet to write her magnum opus. Four stars.
