Historia
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

Revisado: 05-25-24
It's fun, not deep, fun. It's not meant as anything more. I loved it. It made my morning and afternoon drive to and from work bearable and indeed, fun. Get this, turn off your brain and just laugh and enjoy the sillyness!

Ok story with, not my first choice, narrator
Revisado: 01-03-24
This was my first Eddings experience. I'd heard of course of the Belgariad etc but never read any before.
The story is pretty straightforward. Clear goodies and baddies with reasonable world building in terms of places, people and "fantasy constraints". Only problem with the story is that the good guys didn't really find many obstacles - yes they didn't finish what they wanted to do (very clear desire to make a series, never even a thought of resolution at any point during the book) but they kept moving forwards without any trouble.
I'll probably read the second book but not audio book... The narrator does voices decent enough and, apart from some awkward places here or there, was fine. But for me, and this is very much just me, medieval type fantasy needs an accent other than very strongly American. Like I say, it's just a preference I have and listening to this just didn't work for me.

In Music as a Mirror of History, Great Courses favorite Professor Greenberg of San Francisco Performances returns with a fascinating and provocative premise: Despite the abstractness and the universality of music - and our habit of listening to it divorced from any historical context - music is a mirror of the historical setting in which it was created. Music carries a rich spectrum of social, cultural, historical, and philosophical information, all grounded in the life and experience of the composer.

One for historians and musicians alike
Revisado: 02-12-23
I won't pretend to say I am an expert on music and, give or take a moment or two over the course of the lectures I didn't need to be.
This is primarily a history course and I absolutely loved it. I haven't powered through one of these Great Courses like this in years. The lecturer has a great personality and makes it enjoyable. The choice of music for me was great - the last lecture was something different to be sure. As a history teacher in genuinely looking to use these stories on my classroom. Don't hold back, this is great!

Strong story, sad narrator
Revisado: 01-16-23
If you got through the first book of the series then you're going to try this one and you should. It has the same writing style, well researched and intriguing story. I enjoyed it and was satisfied at the end 🙂
My only issue was the narrator - his pronunciation was fine as was his pacing etc. It's just that he sounds depressed the whole time. I'm not saying the book was happy, laugh a minute stuff - far from it, but I did often hope the guy could take a chill pill or something. It's not a deal breaker by any means, but I'll avoid him if possible in future.

Stuff You Know But Still Need to Hear
Revisado: 01-12-23
Very useful stuff that you really do know but having someone remind you is great.
The author focuses on the parent - if you're looking for parenting strategies, look elsewhere. It's all about the parent dealing with (or not) the challenges of parenting.
I personally like her sarcasm, even if swearing isn't my thing - still, the title tells you what you're in for so didn't bother me. I enjoyed it, would recommend.
Narrator is great - personality clear and puts the author's voice out there well.

Well performed, weirdly edited ED story
Revisado: 11-11-22
The story is ok - the end is somewhat predictably cheesey with a few too many convenient plot points generally. That said, it was better than I thought it'd be overall. To be honest I did not like the protaganist and kind of hoped they would not succeed - i don't usually go for the so-called bad guys, but this story feels like the best of the worst in terms of who to root for.
The performance is quite good; he does many voices and tries to give it life. There is pretty impressive audio in terms of sound effects (straight from the game), music etc. I had to slow it down though, 0.9x or 0.95x.
The biggest gripe for me is the differences from the book (which I read concurrently). It is the same story with 95% the same text. But when the story goes into lots of dialogue, the narrator skips the dialogue tags and it switches so fast between characters that it's hard to know who is speaking.
If you're a fan of the game it's a fun story. Enjoy it as a guilty pleasure.

For thousands of years The Chiss Ascendancy has been an island of calm, a centre of power and a beacon of integrity. But that stability has been eroded by a cunning foe that winnows away trust and loyalty in equal measure. Bonds of fidelity have given way to lines of division among the families. Satisfying end to actually a Star Wars story
Revisado: 03-03-22
The writing as always is ok rather than brilliant. If I have to read that someone's lip twitched or someone snorted, I'll roll my eyes but he really knows how to weave a good story. I found it hard at times to remember which alien race was which, but all ok as things got resolved at the end. Only James Luceno and Zahn have continued what little faith I maintain in the SW franchise.
Marc Thompson just keeps going... I never liked his voice for Ar Alani's first officer, but otherwise this repertoire is astounding. He tends to get excited in action packed places which makes me laugh, but he's performing, not narrative so it's all good.
I will miss Thrawn... that is until Disney ruins him somehow. Don't worry, they will find a way.

A fun easy sci fi murder mystery
Revisado: 09-24-21
This is a simple murder mystery with a sci fi setting. No space or aliens - a bit Avatar in its idea with the whole connecting to other bodies through neural networks. But nothing too deep and meaningful here. No major plot twists etc - it's an easy(ish) read that was fun.

The only problem I had with the narration was the Gospel of Luke - every time he said "Luke" I expected to hear...
