Historia
In the 1990s, a “purity industry” emerged out of the white evangelical Christian culture. Purity rings, purity pledges, and purity balls came with a dangerous message: girls are potential sexual “stumbling blocks” for boys and men, and any expression of a girl’s sexuality could reflect the corruption of her character. This message traumatized many girls - resulting in anxiety, fear, and experiences that mimicked the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder - and trapped them in a cycle of shame.

#PurityCulture is Damaging Women
Revisado: 11-14-18
Linda Kay Klein brings a number of stories from different women about their issues associated with Purity Culture, and highlights some of the psychological and physical dangers associated with it. Some of these are psychological (difficulty engaging in sex, extreme guilt, wishing for pain/punishment to make oneself closer to God *a very abusive version of God*). Other stories also addressed physical dangers. For instance, one of the women she spoke with was raped by her brother and her parents treated it as mutually sinful. This ideology had a major impact on those of us with regards to consent, our worth, and our sexuality. Ms. Klein opens a much-needed discussion to the role of purity culture on girls and women. I highly recommend reading/listening to this book. #Consent #Sexuality #EmotionalAbuse #ExVangelical #ExCatholic

Historia
Born to a pioneering family in Upstate New York in the late 1800s, Allene Tew was beautiful, impetuous, and frustrated by the confines of her small hometown. At eighteen, she met Tod Hostetter at a local dance, having no idea that the mercurial charmer she would impulsively wed was heir to one of the wealthiest families in America. But when he died twelve years later, Allene packed her bags for New York City. Never once did she look back.

The story of Allene Tew is fascinating, but it comes off a bit flat in this book. The entrepreneurial spirit, many marriages, travels and adventures as well as her resilience in dealing with loss make Allene Tew a fascinating study of survival and renewal.
