I read a lot of litRPG and progression fantasy/cultivation books and this was just so wholesome. You know who a bad guy and who’s a good guy, plus the main character is an absolute cinnamon roll.

It’s not a deep book, and the writing style is simple (in a good way) It’s a good palate cleanser if you want something that you don’t have to think too hard about, and gives you good vibes.

This book really set up our youngest little cinnamon rolls for major jumps in power! Love that for them!

Loved this book! I have the e-book but the audiobook just helps me enjoy it so much more! Binged it in a day and a half.

This series is awesome! Eric is such a good hearted troublemaker. Even the side characters are well written, and all the characters are very human in their flaws. Looking forward to listen to book 3 in December!

I’m not crying, you’re crying!! This book was great! Really felt the emotions of every character and now I’m crying in the airport, while trying to convince the lady next to me that i’m okay, I was just wrapped up in a good book. Thanks for that Jim, i think she thinks I’m crazy! 5 out of 5 stars!

Story starts off with Ash, a young college grad going home to relax and celebrate his birthday, and ends with me, sitting in my living room crying my eyes out at 12:06 AM, after binging this in a single day. So thanks for that Lily Mayne!

Its worth the credit, 100%. If you know this genre, you know whether or not you like Joe Leslie’s narrations. Personally, I thought he did great! Will be ready to cry my heart out again whenever book 2 comes out.

(Please let it be quick because my heart is kind of dying from that cliffhanger)

Not quite what I was expecting, but still good

I think the story itself has the potential to be really good. It feels very “ young adult” for most of the book. The way the characters are described makes me think they are in their early to mid 20s, but the way they act is very naïve. Even those that are supposed to be considered wise beyond their years.

The narrator does a good job of consistently reading the book. There weren’t any long pauses, awkward breaths, or repeated sentences accidentally left in by the editor.
However, don’t expect a lot of tone fluctuation, or character-specific voices. Sometimes you might need to run the dialogue back to keep track of who’s talking, but it’s still worth the credit in my opinion.

Truthfully, I think I would’ve enjoyed the book more had the ending been different. Honestly, the ending kind of just made me mad. We’re left on a cliffhanger, (kind of) which is not my favorite thing ,but considering it was book 1 in a series, i knew it was a possibility.

I just expected more from our two main characters. Instead we were left with angst and a completely avoidable escalation leading into the second book. I’m specifically disappointed in one character, but I’ll let you be the judge of who i mean. A good half of the book is just introspection by the two main characters. Which i liked a lot. All the characters really seem to catch on to the underlying plot of our bad guy pretty quick. Which is a BIG plus for me. I hate sitting through 3/4 of a book going, “How are you all so oblivious to whats happening!”

Its just the ending! SO MAD, ISTG!

Anyway, despite my ranting, I do think it’s worth your credit. I’m looking forward to book 2.

Good… But like every reviewer I have some critics

Good… But like every reviewer I have some critiques. I think the overall concept for the story was pretty good and engaging. But about 3/4 of the way in, the story really seems to lose a lot of its momentum. It’s very disjointed and like some other reviewers said there’s not really a lot of explanation as to why it happens. It kind of felt like the publishing company pushed her for a longer book so she added more stuff to pad the run time.

Even that stuff though I could get over. Know what really irritates me is that they’ve built up the story around a guy who was perfect to be his mate even though he’s just a wolf. He’s a great dad, he’s understanding, and his patience is ever present. But he’s also a great alpha who “defends whats his” except for the fact that the minute toxic people show up in their lives he rolls over and does nothing. It just doesn’t make any sense to me. A good strong father figure and partner would make sure the toxic people don’t throw their lives in the chaos.
A good strong partner with sea sub lay down serious boundaries with his mom tell him he doesn’t want her around and then just let her stay in the house with his daughter saying whatever the hell she feels like. Not once does he back up Seb. He just calmly walks him the other way like “turning the other cheek.” A good partner also wouldn’t allow a homophobic asshole to be his second and a constantly berate his partners sexuality when he knows Seb has low self-esteem. Instead he laughs it off like boys being boys in every book. I just don’t understand that it seems completely out of character. If his second, being a dick is going to play a role in the next book then there needs to be a precursor to him standing up for his mate. Because if all of a sudden the next book comes and he’s all outraged by what the guy says then there’s not gonna be any continuity. And you cant chalk it up to him “knowing Seb can take care of himself” because half of this book is Seb knowing he can’t. That’s why he has to stop running and stay with his mate.

Anyway, all I have to say is if this book series is a reflection of how the author deals with toxic people in her life she needs a therapist.

To anyone out there who needs to hear this. It doesn’t matter if they’re a parent, a best friend, or a stranger you are not obligated to keep them around. You do not owe them your emotional well-being and health. Don't let people emotionally manipulate and hurt you just because they forgot to wear a condom before you were born. Walk away you don’t need them. And yeah that’s speaking from experience.

As an ace person myself i was pleasantly surprised to find the mc was ace too. I listen to a lot of romance books of all different reps and this is the first time i have come close to finding an ace mc pov. Some have side characters who are ace but not the mc of a romance. Anywho, thanks for that it was a happy nugget to stumble upon! I listened to it all in one go. Jenn Burke is a new author for me so i wasn’t sure what to expect but i was really happy with the result! I found this book by looking at Greg Boudreaux‘s page, he’s one of my favorite narrators and he did another great job with this story! I will def be getting the next book in the series.

I liked the case and story in this book. Its got lots of twisty turns, and in classic Ashe fashion multiple problems all needing to be solved at once. When they are working Shaw and North are always entertaining. I find myself rewinding to hear their funny tangent commentaries because is just so ridiculous sometimes. How Ashe can come up with some of this dialog i will never know but it keeps me laughing. We really see some of their ingenuity and growth from previous dangerous encounters. Especially Shaw. In a few dangerous situations he really steps it up and it was so proud to see North could rely on him in those moments. As always the narrator does a great job! I listened to it all in one day!

Ok now i just need ti rant real quick, if you wanna skip this part thats ok. Might have slight/unspecific spoilers. Idk, i havent written it yet. *deep breath in*

At every turn i grew angrier at Shaw’s behavior at home. To be honest i really hoped he would get over his spoiled behavior and actually THINK of what North wants, and DO what North asks of him. It’s the complete unchecked narcissism for me! And The worst part is, North doesn’t even call him on it. He just lets it happen over and over and then storms off without saying what Shaw is doing is f***ed up! Shaw is toxic as hell and pushes what i consider the lines of DubCon if I’m totally honest.
Then theres Nick:
Now look, i dont like how Ashe writes his mc teens. Its clear he isn’t a fan and that fine cause honestly, same here my guy. But Nick and the house dynamic is a cookie cutter repeat of Colt from the H&S: Arrows in the Hand series. Like..not every gay couple gets kids by sudo-adopting gay, angsty, homeless, teens with attitude problems. Thats to specific to be so copy/paste! Also, Its just not realistic to me for Shaw to stand by and support some rando kid getting aggressive with North. At least Hazard stands up for Somerset. Anyway…
Nick blows in like he think the sun shines out his and Shaws asses. Somehow gets this crazy delusion that he loves Shaw and does nothing but disrespect North at every turn. And whats Shaw do…? NOTHING! He encourages his rude behavior towards North for literally no reason. We never get one satisfactory explanation for why Nick is allowed to talk that way to North. But i would never let a stranger, let alone a friend/client/dependent treat my partner the way Shaw lets Nick treat North. Kid or not he can GTFO!

Anywho, thanks Ashe for another installment in this series i love! I only rant cause i am way to emotionally invested in your characters for my own mental health!

I have seen a lot of reviews talking about the sex. And yes there is a lot of senes with sex that are incredibly uncomfortable. However I do think that a lot of people are missing the fact that that’s the point. There is a difference between a “sex senes” that are intended to be sexy, and senes that happens to include sex/ sexual acts. I would say a good 90% of these scenes are there to prove how awful the people in power are. They are made to make the characters and listeners feel powerless and gross. I did not feel like it was done without a reason. The situations give rise to a lot of character development, and help to explain a lot of character motivation as you learn more about each character. However I do think people with certain triggers should be aware going into this book that you’re going to run into a lot of uncomfortable sexual situations.

OK onto the rest of the book. The story itself is very interesting especially once you begin to realize what point in time this whole story takes place. I finished it in one day and never got tired of the narration or the story itself. I won’t say that I always think the characters do the right/smart thing, but they are very human in the mistakes that they make. I also really like the underlying mystery that you begin to suss out and gives us more to look forward to learning in the next book.
If I had one problem with the story it’s just the fact that it kind of leaves on a cliffhanger and I hate those because it just means I have to go spend more money to immediately listen to the next book because I am impulsive and terrible with money. But maybe that’s a me issue not necessarily the books issue.

This was my first time listening to this narrator but I liked him. He definitely has some very passionate moments but I think he did a good job of bringing the emotions to the forefront of the character’s words.

I’m writing this review while listening to the second book so if some of it doesn’t make sense it’s probably because I got too caught up listening to the second book, but I hope this review helps :)
