Historia
Fresh out of rehab, Mallory Quinn takes a job as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy. Mallory immediately loves it. She has her own living space, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body.

Underlying tones of racism, transphobia
Revisado: 10-22-22
This was a very interesting story that pulls you in, good mild horror elements, but unfortunately has underlying tones of racism and transphobia, among other kind of messed up messages. The main character meets someone who says racist things, ends up dating the person who those racist things were said about, and interacts with the person who said the racist things as if it never happened. I’m not sure why those racist things were included as it never involved a plot point, just a person being racist and that being okay. Seemed like the author is trying to say the main character is tolerant, because she can get along with both the racist and the person of color. The transphobia is disappointing too and also the plot line related to this just doesn’t make sense. Also there are some subtle anti-atheist messages. Overall, it’s like the author wanted to make a horror story about his perception of liberal elites. Disappointing.

Interesting premise, missed opportunities
Revisado: 09-17-19
This book takes place in a possibly post-apocalyptic world. There is a virus that we have heard wiped out a lot of people, but we don’t know the full extent of the destruction and the main characters don’t have first hand evidence, only what they have read and heard others say. Bad things have happened to them and they are trying to figure out answers. Overall it was interesting. There were some missed opportunities for highlighting the desperate nature of their condition. Big spoilers ahead.....Specifically, the main character had more awareness than the others who were brainwashed/hypnotized to stay on the path in the woods. The horror of being aware in a group like this wasn’t as intensely highlighted as I would have liked. That is a super scary concept and while the main character was upset by this I wanted more. Also the whole premise of their capture and stay at CECIL was based on eugenics and getting these people with “special” abilities to survive an epidemic. I wish the characters understood earlier that the premise was based on eugenics and tried to grapple with that horror. Perhaps a big argument/blow-up in the group and the main characters wondering if their parents were complicit in this. Instead they don’t discuss it and the parents just say that when CECIL told him their plan about saving people with special abilities that they said no and then were abducted. Some additional discussion about why they were horrified by this concept would have been good. Finally perhaps I missed a description of race elsewhere but it seems the main characters (and perhaps all the characters with special abilities??) were white but the one character specifically described as having brown skin wasn’t part of the special abilities group. So is this just a weird coincidence or is this part of the creepy eugenics premise? I hope the horrors of this are explored more in Book 3.

A suspenseful escape story
Revisado: 08-16-19
This is a suspenseful escape story about two people trapped in an unknown world. The world is post-apocalyptic and not much is learned about the world in this part of the series. The beginning of the story reminded me of the Xenogenesis trilogy by Octavia Butler where the main character wakes up trapped in an unusual environment and remains trapped there while slowly learning where they are. It also reminds me of the beginning of Butler’s Fledgling story where the main character wakes up with amnesia and you experience the character’s disorientation. Overall the author does a good job of creating a suspenseful escape tale and the narration is excellent in maintaining that tension. I’m looking forward to learning more about the world in the next book.
