What creative idea! I wasn’t sure what to expect but I found this story engaging, interesting, funny, and moving. The historical elements were conveyed so well, and I felt a warm attachment towards Harriet and the other musicians. I also absolutely love that the two songs were included at the end. My only possible note was that Bob did the narration them self. Their voice is so recognisable that it made it hard for me to fully sink into the POV of the MC. There were a few times where I heard Bob say “I” in the story and I had to remind myself, that’s Darnell, not Bob. That would kind of take me out of the story.
Highly recommend

I usually have a policy of not reviewing books I don’t finish, but these other reviews are so off that I feel a need to try and spread some truth. The 3 main characters are absolutely flat and unlikeable. There is no warmth or charm or interesting quirky traits, they are each cookie cutter cliches you have seen a MILLION times before. The sad overweight self hating pushover FMC who lacks any curiosity or joy about her life, the MMC with a brashness that is weird and inappropriate and inconsistent with ‘charm’, the other MMC who is a two dimensional snobby rich guy. Also the story has suspicious kinda racist descriptions of music, and, so far at least, isn’t handling body positivity well at all.

Awful Female Narrator, Exhausting Female Character

This was one of the worst narrators I’ve heard in a LONG time. The woman voicing the FMC POV was terrible. Her vocal tone was a mix between uptight professional newsreader and teenage cheerleader; it was weird and off putting. However when she voiced the male character it was even worse.
As for the writing, there was a lot of heart in this story but ultimately it was just exhausting. The FMC has created a story in her head and will not have a conversation, or accept any other information to sway her perspective. It is soooo tiring to endlessly read about a person determined to self sabotage at all costs. There wasn’t enough respite in the writing, bad things happened, more bad things happened, more bad things happened, more bad things happened. There wasn’t much banter, and the little moments of happiness didn’t ring true enough to carry through the bad times. The characters felt sort of flat and when the HEA finally came it didn’t feel joyous because there had just been too much ‘bad things’.
This felt like a first book, and I’m glad to have read other books by Abby Jimenez, so I know she can write great books.

I’ve listened to this series a few times now and everytime I get to this book it’s a shock. The narrator sounds so different all of a sudden. Her voice for Sookie, her tone and expression are exaggerated and just wrong. The actual audio is not great either as there are a lot of mouth sounds. I don’t know what changed behind the scenes when this was recorded but this book is not enjoyable. The difference in the audio keeps me fully separated from the story.

AI Narrator? Story Not Finished

I wonder if this was narrated by AI? I know it has a human’s name but I understand AI companies have purchased the rights/ vocal sound to some human narrators… there were some very weird pronunciations by this narrator. They did not seem connected to a human’s accent or lack of understanding (common words) but seemed as if they were read phonetically, as if by an AI who didn’t know better. The errors were confident and exactly the same each time that word came up… idk?
Otherwise, the book’s pretty good. Definitely YA. Two big drawbacks, the first is that it is quite slow. There are exciting sections scattered through, and the MC and the world are both interesting, so it mostly kept my attention. But it’s slow. The second BIG issue with the story is that it doesn’t finish. At All. It just stops with nothing in any way resolved. As if a longer book was just ripped in half at a random place and the first bit sold as ‘book 1’.

Terrible Narration

The narrator/ producers decided to voice this book in the most distracting confusing way. The pov changes from chapter to chapter between characters with different genders and accents. When the pov changes the narrator uses the same perky American teenage girl voice/ accent/ inflections for each character, except when they speak out loud, when she changes her voice/ accent to suit the character. The book begins with many chapters in a row in the pov of the MC teenaged girl, so that becomes the “voice” of that character in your mind. Then halfway through the book the other povs begin. Suddenly the chapter from the perspective of the surly English guy is being performed with the same “voice” as the American teen girl. Except when he speaks out loud when he suddenly has a deep voice with an English accent. Then more and more POVs are introduced and they all have the inner dialogue of the perky teen girl who is the MC. It’s SO WRONG. WTH?
Also the writing begins quite badly. It gets better as the story goes on but you have to persevere. This is a book to skip, or to buy on sale.

Slow copy of B&A made worse by narrator

I’ve tried to listen to this three times. It’s mind numbingly boring. I really tried to like it but it’s too similar to B&A - if B&A was not as well written, and the story felt like something you’ve already read. The decision to use the same narrator was terrible choice. Her delivery is so distinctive it just emphasises the sad thin ways this book is a poor copy of B&A. Also the narrator’s overly emotional breathy style makes the story drag even more than it would from the writing. Too me this book seems like a cynical grab for money- taking advantage of fans of B&A. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn it was ghost written. It has the feel of a junior author trying to copy B&A; the feel of an author who doesn’t care about the story.

I saw that this has been described as the beginning of The Magnus Academy trilogy. I think that’s an unfair expectation, as this little novel requires the reader to have read and remembered the Tarot Sequence trilogy. Having said that, this is as good as the previous books. Enjoyable and super engaging. Definitely recommend, although it will leave you desperate for the next book.

Great story imperfect narration

This is a fun, scary, twisty YA adventure which lives up to Bayron’s previous works. If you enjoyed the others I think you’ll like this too. I think it’s to be expected with this genre, but it is worth reminding yourself to suspend your disbelief and critical thinking, so you can just enjoy the ride.
I was surprised by the narration though. Surely Bayron is established and esteemed enough that publishers get her top quality professionals? That doesn’t seem to have been the case. The narrator wasn’t bad, but there were many instances where she seemed to think a sentence was complete and then realised there was still a word or two on the next line. And the production have recorded the drop-ins in a different way than the rest of the book. So right in the middle of a paragraph there will be a sentence that has a more condensed sound that seems to have been recorded in a much smaller space. Then the book continues on as normal - till the next drop-in. It’s very distracting.
