Historia
In January 2022, Bruce Eric Kaplan found himself confused and upset by the state of the world and the state of his life as a television writer in Los Angeles. He started a journal to keep from going mad, which eventually became They Went Another Way. The book’s through line traces his attempt to get a television project set up in the increasingly Byzantine world of Hollywood.

Favorite of the year
Revisado: 01-13-25
I can’t begin to explain how much I loved this book. It was so funny and poignant but in such a simple, elegant way. It was almost like a meditation, if meditation was meant to entertain and make you laugh and cry and the same time. Bruce Eric Kaplan delivers a soliloquy about his home, his children, old friends, birds flying into windows and Glenn Close all with the same neutral cadence whether it’s based in awe & bewilderment or just sheer annoyance. I continue to pick up this book long after finishing it and just open to a random page for either inspiration to write or to just feel present & grounded. Which all might lead the same thing anyway; perfection in the imperfect.
Which is what perfection actually is.
This book is both about that, and IS that, without ever saying anything remotely close to that whatsoever.

Martha Ratliff conceded long ago that she’d likely spend her life alone. She was fine with it, happy with her solo existence, stimulated by her work as a librarian in Maine. But then she met Alan, a charming and sweet-natured salesman whose job took him on the road for half the year. When he asked her to marry him, she said yes, even though he still felt a little bit like a stranger.

Never disappointed by this master of mystery. Move over Angela Lansbury. Lolz.
I’m no mystery freak but Swanson never fails to stump.

Historia
Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs. Shrouded in the shadows, she sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall.

Not for the faint ones
Revisado: 07-23-24
One of the scariest books I’ve ever read, hands down. It freakin rules. If you love horror but find supernatural annoying and gross stuff just gross and not necessarily scary, this buds for you.

To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?” When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay. Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel.

Historia
In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick. The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

Cute but overrated
Revisado: 06-22-24
I don’t know. I liked it. I didn’t love it. I don’t understand why it wasn’t just a movie. A movie about the making of this movie— not that they won’t do it— but I just don’t get why it needed to be a novel first. It’s not super easy or interesting to listen to a
Screenplay being read aloud. It’s just not naturally
Easy on the ears. When he was talking to us in the present day, from actually reading a book on audible, it was much easier to feel immersed. But now that I’ve finished I don’t understand the point of him narrating an audible book. In the written novel
It must also say audible. But an audible book is usually a book first & then produced as an audiobook unless the conceit here is that it went straight to audible? Ok but why?
I really love the story but the format of the whole thing made me not enjoy this book as much as I wanted to.
I guess this review won’t make any sense unless you’ve actually listened to the book. It wasn’t scary. The ideas they had for the movie sound scary so I guess I’ll just look forward to watching the movie adaptation.
Lame

Crazy disappointing!
Revisado: 06-20-24
I feel like this novel was totally different before someone gave the author notes. In this case I’m choosing to believe it was a partner and not an editor, or possibly the author second guessing herself? The overall tone was mysterious and creepy and I was SO there for it! Unfortunately in went the way of blue balls. Like she kept setting us up for something major to happen up until the very very end only to bring us to what I feel like has been a 12 hour (or however long this book was) cold shower. I don’t recommend.

Incredible writing
Revisado: 05-01-24
I loved this book. So sad & also hilarious. Tanner is such a great writer I wanted to devour her sentences. The readers who didn’t love this book are most likely the ones who found themselves becoming the punchline. Sorry/not sorry. If you find yourself wanting to make out with your own fauxhawked blonde baby then you might want to pass.

A mediocre filler when you’re between books
Revisado: 01-08-24
It wasn’t awful but kind of fell apart at the end with too much explanation about some job that was confusing and hard to connect with the rest of the story. Felt overly thought out, inconsistent with the storytelling but enough so that it kind of ruined the entire book.
