Historia
From the internationally bestselling author of No god but God comes a fascinating, provocative, and meticulously researched biography that challenges long-held assumptions about the man we know as Jesus of Nazareth. Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history's most influential and enigmatic characters by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived: first-century Palestine, an age awash in apocalyptic fervor.

In a way I wish I could have actually read this rather than hearing it. But, even just listening is quite thought provoking. I wish I had a book group to discuss it with.

Long but worthwhile.

The writing or should I say the vocabulary is exquisite. The story is terribly complicated. I feel as if it would need more than one reading to truly take it all in.

Historia
Survival in Man’s Second Dark Age...Three hundred years after the fall of society, the last fragments of civilization are clinging to life, living in the ruins of the ancient cities in nearly-medieval conditions. Technology has been reduced to legend, monsters roam the forests, and fear reigns supreme. But that is just the beginning...The wind-borne spores are spreading, disfiguring men and twisting their minds, turning them into creatures that threaten to destroy the townships.

Interesting. So far as the first in a series it seems to be progressing acceptably. I guess if I wanted to be more critical I would have to say that it is a bit formulaic. The expected characters are the less intelligent ones etc. there does seem to be room for difference though, maybe.

Historia
Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

The Long Way Home
Revisado: 10-03-16
I found this novel to be extremely thought provoking, both in how the story evolved, and in the words and language Penny used to tell the story. In a way, listening to it was a bit disappointing because I definitely would like to see the words on the pages. There are quite a few places I would love to be able to write down for future reference but, Alas!, in the audio they go by so fast that isn't possible.

Historia
The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn't much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he's content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.

Last month i listened to 14, this week i listened to The Fold. I very much liked the beginning of the fold, but was a teeny bit disappointed when it became a variation on the theme of 14. Perhaps especially because it was the same reader doing almost the same accents. Still, i enjoyed the end when Roger & Veet showed up in San Diego. I am hoping that means the story will continue. I love the mystery buildings etc. but not so much the Cthulhu monster in the other dimensions.

Historia
There are 206 bones in the human body. Forensic anthropologists know them intimately, can read in them stories of brief or long lives and use them to reconstruct every kind of violent end. 206 Bones opens with Tempe regaining consciousness and discovering that she is in some kind of very small, very dark, very cold enclosed space. She is bound, hands to feet. Who wants Tempe dead, or at least out of the way, and why? Tempe begins slowly to reconstruct...

206 Bones
Revisado: 08-27-15
It has been several years since i listened to a 'Bones' book. I am glad for the chance to finally get back to one. I love blending of the French & English dialogue. I typically enjoy the stories, and this one was no exception. Because there are so many books in Reichs's series she is a good choice for any reader who wants to live in the same book world fora while with characters who are worth following.

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Weirdly cool!
Revisado: 08-25-15
When I downloaded 14, I had no idea what I was getting. It is unexpectedly strange, scary, entertaining, and thought provoking. What I like best about it though is the camaraderie of the characters. To me that kept the horrific aspects of the story just enough at bay to make it possible to listen to the whole book.

Historia
Katie Chandler had always heard that New York is a weird and wonderful place, but this small-town Texas gal had no idea how weird until she moved there. Everywhere she goes, she sees something worth gawking at and Katie is afraid she's a little too normal to make a splash in the big city. Working for an ogre of a boss doesn't help. Then, seemingly out of the blue, Katie gets a job offer from Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., a company that tricks of the trade to the magic community. For MSI, Katie's ordinariness is an asset.

It's a delightful, amusing story, the sort of story that is good to listen to or read when one needs to take some time away from the cares of the world. I am looking forward to more like this one.
