Historia
Castles in the Air is a beautifully written, autobiographical story of rescuing an ancient mansion. Gwydir Castle was inhabited by ravers and rats until Judy Corbett and her husband Peter Welford found and acquired this 500-year-old house mouldering in the foothills of Snowdonia. Despite the toads, strange smells and squatters, they decided to mortgage themselves to the hilt to bring the castle back to life.

Well told historical novel
Revisado: 12-19-24
Very interesting story about the acquisition and restoration of Gwydir Castle in northern Wales. It has lots of detail and even has ghost in it. Also, it culminates shortly after a visit by the Prince of Wales after the restoration was nearly 100% complete.

Historia
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

A great story at a historical time in Moscow
Revisado: 06-23-24
A damn good story that captures a survivor's picture of Russia through a span of 3 or 4 decades. Well worth the time it takes. Reminds you of what Churchill said about democracy, "It's the worst form of government in the world, except for all the others!"

Historia
Encounters at the Heart of the World concerns the Mandan Indians, iconic Plains people whose teeming, busy towns on the upper Missouri River were, for centuries, at the center of the North American universe. We know of them mostly because Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1804-1805 with them, but why don't we know more? Who were they really? In this extraordinary book, Elizabeth A. Fenn retrieves their history by piecing together important new discoveries in archaeology, anthropology, geology, climatology, epidemiology, and nutritional science.

Native American life long before 1492
Revisado: 06-23-24
There were tribes across north and South America over two thousand years ago. They migrated from Asia across what is now the Bering strait. The shape of the continent has changed since then due to weather, receding glaciers, earthquakes, volcanoes, erosion and evolution. Remains of early inhabitants along the western shoreline are not found because they are now covered by 350 feet of water. The Mandans were a large tribe in the upper Missouri River area. They lived communally and their homes were similar to the tribal adobe structure in the SW and the Mayan structures in Mexico, in my opinion. The smallpox epidemic spread by new explorers and settlers from Europe hit the Mandan particularly hard in the mid 1800s due to their gregarious nature and their large social living conditions.

An important and impressive story for our time
Revisado: 06-23-24
The story is well told by a cast of four. It feels like you are reading the dialogue of a movie. The narrators are actors, the characters are realistic and well developed. If you grew up when segregation was ending and George Wallace was still in politics this book will resonate for you. This is one of the best books I have listened to in a long time. It's sometimes a painful story probably because it could fictionalized true story. I've enjoyed several of Baldacci's books, but this is my favorite.

I liked it but I didn't love it. The details of the story, the weapons, etc. make everything seem so real, believable and clever. Unfortunately they are predictably formulaic.

This was an enjoyable story updated to today's technologies and political circumstances. Nothing to surprising really, but it was a well paced story that connects possibly because it seems almost plausible.

In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness.

Good story
Revisado: 03-13-22
Great story about the life of Kit Carson and life in the Southwest. It pairs well with other books about the 19th century happenings in the growing country. The Civil War and the "war with Indians" is more complex than we think, but if you pair this with the biography of William Tecumseh Sherman, and Dodge City you really get a feel for life in New Mexico, Texas, manifest destiny, Indian life, It's a puzzle and a quilt woven over time by our ancestors. History of our country is much more interesting in these books than it appeared in high school history. thankfully. Blood and Treasure, the life of Daniel Boone is also amazing and captivating, as is Hero of Two Worlds covering the life of Marquis de Lafayette and his influence on our country.
