Narrator Outstanding
Revisado: 02-06-25
The narrator did a fantastic job differentiating the multiple characters but the story its self was sorely lacking. I believe I bought this from the daily special and the genre was stated as mystery/thriller. I obviously was just trying out the author because the title should have been my clue that it was not my cup of tea. I don’t generally enjoy horror books and one that kills kids is exceptionally abhorrent to me.

Jennifer Thorne skewers all-too-familiar family dynamics in this sly, wickedly funny vacation-Gothic. Beautifully unhinged and deeply satisfying, Diavola is a sharp twist on the classic haunted house story, exploring loneliness, belonging, and the seemingly inescapable bonds of family mythology.

Ghost/Haunted House Story NOT Mystery
Revisado: 07-26-24
This book was presented as a quirky, subtlety comical, mystery novel. Instead, it was a dark fairytale. I hung in until the end but did not enjoy the unimaginative, irritating, overused reference to the ‘

Name Game
Revisado: 07-23-24
I can’t be the only one that can’t remember names! The story was good and had the requisite twists and turns and a bit (a lot) of surprises at the end. However, my ADD had me rewinding over and over again to keep up with all of the characters and names! Not only did you have to keep up with first names when the teen characters were first introduced and throughout the ‘action’ with the matured, adult characters; you also had to try to remember the ‘sir’ names used by the investigative force - necessitating a rewind again and again! If you have a good memory for names (or are astute enough to develop a character list) and enjoy crime/mystery, you will undoubtedly enjoy this ‘book’ even more than I did.

Not up to par!
Revisado: 12-02-23
I agree with some of the earlier reviews that commented on the narrator crossing over between the Dallas books. It was very disconcerting. I alsoa had to listen to several chapters throughout the book over again to try to connect the dots. I thought the space autopsy was a bit bizarre and distracting. I didn’t know if we were moving from mystery to science fiction. I definitely did not appreciate that part of the storyline. Also, the ending personnel decisions regarding the good doctor seemed very unlikely and unrealistic to me.

Growing up, Jena Friedman didn’t care about being likable. And she never wanted to be a comedian, either. She wouldn’t discover her knack for the funny business until research for her college thesis led her to take an improv class in Chicago. That anthropology paper, written on race, class, and gender in the city’s comedy scene, was, in Jena’s own words, “just as funny as it sounds.” But it did lay the groundwork for a career that has seen her write and produce for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, the Late Show with David Letterman, and the Oscar-nominated Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

Mystery Fans Will Love Beautifully Written and Read
Revisado: 05-20-23
First book I’ve ‘read’ by this author and narrator. Love the writing style of the author and the narrator was excellent! Don’t like giving 5 stars but really wanted to encourage mystery fans to listen to this book. I generally listen to mysteries because I like to put the puzzle pieces together as early as possible and contrast with the author’s conclusion. With this book you get the puzzle, twists, and turns (and more twists and turns) with a beautifully told story that uses the entire toolkit of the English language without being ostentatious and verbose. Perfect imagery. If I had to identify a ‘fault’, I would say that the ending was too perfect. There were too many overlapping, character relationships that are suddenly revealed at the end.
