I like the premise of the story and what it’s doing but the central romance didn’t feel interesting or believable. Everything moved way too fast. Also the dialogue was so cringey. I didn’t hate it but it wasn’t worth the time.

Worth it but...
Revisado: 07-29-24
This book, like the last two, had beautiful prose and imagery, compelling characters, a vivid setting. There's two or three good books in this book and it feels muddled and smushed together. It's still worth a read and the credit but I wish it were split and paced differently. Maybe it's just my taste but there definitely could have been less drawn out fight scenes, all of which reminded me of the Demon Hunter anime for some reason. And maybe a little less introspection. This writing style/pacing just works better for me when there's less high stakes horror and action. Although I will say after finishing this book I feel as if I know these characters as well as I know my family haha

Derek is LitenVärld's most loyal employee. He lives and breathes the job, from the moment he wakes up in a converted shipping container at the edge of the parking lot to the second he clocks out of work 18 hours later. But after taking his first ever sick day, his manager calls that loyalty into question. An excellent employee like Derek, an employee made to work at LitenVärld, shouldn't need time off.

Cohesive, endearing and universal. As someone who worked retail this resonated in a way that the last one did not. In the end we are all vulnerable to comodification, to loneliness. It only takes one bully to reinforce the status quo and so we must work together to break it. Anyway clearly I was moved by this and the narration was great. Well worth your time.

Historia
Remarkably little is known about the European eel, Anguilla anguilla. So little, in fact, that scientists and philosophers have, for centuries, been obsessed with what has become known as the “eel question”: Where do eels come from? What are they? Are they fish or some other kind of creature altogether? Even in our age of advanced science, no one has ever seen eels mating or giving birth, and we still don’t understand what drives them, after living for decades in freshwater, to swim great distances back to the ocean at the end of their lives. They remain a mystery.

This book isn't exactly what I expected but I'm really glad I finished it. It interwove many disparate concepts to create something that will stay in your mind for a lifetime. Also I can't help but respect the respect he pays to Rachel Carson. Worth the listen.

Amina al-Sirafi should be content. After a storied and scandalous career as one of the Indian Ocean’s most notorious pirates, she’s survived backstabbing rogues, vengeful merchant princes, several husbands, and one actual demon to retire peacefully with her family to a life of piety, motherhood, and absolutely nothing that hints of the supernatural.

This was such a satisfying amazing read! I loved all the characters and as always the world seemed richly, infinitely alive. I hope this turns into a trilogy!

Historia
Alex Green is a young girl in a world much like ours, except for its most seminal event: the Mass Dragoning of 1955, when hundreds of thousands of ordinary wives and mothers sprouted wings, scales, and talons; left a trail of fiery destruction in their path; and took to the skies. Was it their choice? What will become of those left behind? Why did Alex’s beloved aunt Marla transform but her mother did not? Alex doesn’t know. It’s taboo to speak of.

Boring, Repetitive and Unfocused
Revisado: 09-24-23
I agree with all the politics in this book. That's definitely not my issue. It's just a poorly written book. With shoddy world building, no real conflict and flat characters. Also she says everything 3 times and keeps recapping the book about every four chapters. There's just so much filler. This should have been a short story. Maybe a Novella.

Historia
When Finlay Ashowan joins the staff of the King and Queen of Daxaria, he’s an enigma. No one knows where he comes from or how he came to be where he is, which suits Fin just fine. He’s satisfied simply serving as the royal cook, keeping nosy passersby out of his kitchen, and concocting some truly uncanny meals. But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs.

Don't judge a book by its cover
Revisado: 03-03-23
I was lured in by the cozy cover only to discover repetitive description, wooden dialogue, no pacing and a main character so bland that generic isekai protagonists seem full of depth and complexity. The completely unnecessary paragraphs of exposition are particularly painful too. The romance/love interest has no chemistry with the main character either.
I almost never dnf a book, especially one that I can't return but I'm halfway through and I can't keep going. Worst of all this book seems so outdated. Like it was written in 1990 and the author had never read a fantasy book since. The female characters are all tired tropes and the male characters all exist to give lip service to how cool and noble and smart three main character is.
A terrible waste of an awesome premise. It's so derivative that for a while I thought that this was written by an AI prompt.

Historia
Rich Dad Poor Dad is Robert's story of growing up with two dads - his real father and the father of his best friend, his rich dad - and the ways in which both men shaped his thoughts about money and investing. The book explodes the myth that you need to earn a high income to be rich and explains the difference between working for money and having your money work for you. In the 20th anniversary edition of this classic, Robert offers an update on what we’ve seen over the past 20 years related to money, investing, and the global economy.

Pretty Gross
Revisado: 12-02-22
There's a peppering of good financial advice such as seek out passive income, increase your financial literacy, join a union and don't live paycheck to paycheck. But it's mired in pointless anecdotes, heavy repetition and a lot of contradicting points. And almost no practical advice whatsoever, just nebulous "think rich" ideology.
The author also claims Donald Trump as his personal hero which should be a financial red flag no matter where you fall on the political spectrum. At one point he recommends joining an MLM. Often, it feels like the ramblings of your out of touch uncle and clearly should have been 1/3 its length.
Do yourself a favor and get a book that's more current and less about aggrandizing the author's ego.
