Historia
When Surgeon General Vivek Murthy sounded the alarm that loneliness “represents an urgent public health concern”—exacerbated by social media overuse, the residual effects of the pandemic, and the lack of meaningful relationships—trusted therapist Dr. Ruth K. Westheimer knew that her unique perspective and expertise could help. Long beloved for breaking stigmas around sexual problems, Dr. Ruth made it her mission to help individuals break free from the bonds of hopelessness and isolation.

Dr Ruth’s Goodbye message to the lonely
Revisado: 11-17-24
After hearing a wonderful podcast featuring one of the co-authors of this book dispensing quick practical information on communication and hearing her fond memories of the 96 year old Dr Ruth and working on this book together, I was looking forward to reading (hearing) “The Joy of Communication”.
Sadly the book itself wasn’t what I expected or hoped for. It felt like a likable enough grandmother giving aged advice to very lonely adult. It was much less about joy or connection than loneliness and Dr. Ruth’s personal history. If it was written from my own grandmother I would treasure the book as a way of remembering her and would love to pass it down to future generations so people would have a fun time remembering her.
Much of the advice wasn’t bad (I tell people to join Meetup too), but most of it was JUST OFF, the way that a lot of advice from any 96 year old might be. “Don’t work for a company that doesn’t make you come into the office full time, otherwise how are you going to make friends at work”.
But the biggest disappointment was as I said, it really had very little to do with joy or Communication. Too Bad. Goodbye Dr. Ruth, and thanks for being all of who you were.

Likely one of the most meaningful reads of the Trump Era.
Revisado: 10-08-22
An accurate modern day history that reminds us all of who, what, when, where, and a good deal of the how of what we have all been through together. Maggie Haberman has spent a lifetime of reporting on Former President Trump and she honestly and respectfully shows us behind the curtain without trying to make it anything more or less than the facts call for. She really does not look at the often devastating effects of his style of thinking and “leadership” because that’s not what this book was about. It’s simply a history that by itself is one of the best and likely most meaningful reads of the Trump Era.

Carol Leonnig has been reporting on the Secret Service for The Washington Post for most of the last decade, bringing to light the secrets, scandals, and shortcomings that plague the agency today - from a toxic work culture to dangerously outdated equipment to the deep resentment within the ranks at key agency leaders, who put protecting the agency’s once-hallowed image before fixing its flaws. But the Secret Service wasn’t always so troubled.

So close but no - better as a history book
Revisado: 08-04-22
Reminds me of an old joke where a reporter in interviewing Mrs. Lincoln outside fords theater after Lincoln was shot. He says to her yes, yes, yes, Mrs. Lincoln but how did you like the show? This writer did a great job telling the history of the secret service, including telling how President Trump Politicized this branch of the government (like so many others). But there is a much better story to be told by someone able to describe and explain how VP Pence SS details was calling their loved ones to say goodbye on Jan 6, while others were secretly supporting P. Trump at all costs. And of course later saying whoops we erased all of the texts and records during the planning and execution of the first overthrow of the US government by a sitting President - That’s the story We need to hear. This is a good history book for people reading it 100 years from now, covering almost up to things got interesting, and just before we found out the part of the plot that the SS played in the attempted overthrow of the US democracy.

How not to do relationships
Revisado: 06-12-16
Any additional comments?
For me, the author simply missed the point that you can't "experience a kind of relationship" by trying it out for a short period of time and then writing about all the pros and cons. Every relationship style is right for some people and not for others and every person is different, not to mention that both people and relationships change over time. My perception was that he probably hurt some people along the way while he gathered his information.
Read "More than Two" for a loving understanding of Polyamory, "The Ethical Slut" for an open minded exploration of relationship types and growth.

a sad little book that had great potential
Revisado: 02-22-16
Any additional comments?
This little book headed in the right direction by telling the reader that if you want to truly attract women spend a little time and get to know and listen to them, and then truthfully tell them what you feel. But the pitiful author (who horridly self read the book) couldn't resist turning a great message into a series of recorded pick-up lines and strategies. Maybe someone with a good voice for thoughtfully conveying information will mercifully rerecord much of the first half of this book and leave it at that. But after hearing this version, I don't think I will ever get the slime out or my ears.

Feels to me like a I Googled story.
Revisado: 02-04-16
Any additional comments?
To me it felt like the author Googled a bunch of stories and put them together in a book. It felt like little original thought was expressed and it was a waste of my time.

Feels Like Analysis and Theoretical at its Worst
Revisado: 05-22-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
What was most disappointing about Cindy M. Meston and David M. Buss ’s story?
Guess what young girls have sex (and don't have sex) for every reason under the sun. Older women have sex when they want to. May be some interesting findings in a meta study of the subject but this book certainly didn't have much of anything to enlighten me. (Or maybe any thinking adult???)
Did Renee Raudman do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Why Women Have Sex?

Think smart people are just born that way? Think again. Drawing on diverse studies of the mind, from psychology to linguistics, philosophy, and learning science, Art Markman, Ph.D., demonstrates the difference between "smart thinking" and raw intelligence, showing listeners how memory works, how to learn effectively, and how to use knowledge to get things done. He then introduces his own three-part formula for listeners to employ "smart thinking" in their daily lives.

A 2 page PDF of a book.
Revisado: 04-04-14
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
This book would have made a better 2 page handout. It's not that it was devoid of original thought it's just that the 2 pages of original (and very good) thought are so muddied by useless overused examples. I suspect the author fell in love with his own words. A 45 minute corporate presentation does not a good book make.
Would you ever listen to anything by Art Markman again?
not unless he gets a editor and co-author.

Revisado: 04-08-13
What did you love best about Salt Sugar Fat?
This is an overall great book. It is a first person review of the history and science behind what the food industry knows about your impulsive tastes and how they use Salt, Sugar and Fat to control an addictive like desire.Once You educate yourself, you can choose whats best for you.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
The narration was good enough to make me want to remember the words and how it made me feel when I first heard them.
Which scene was your favorite?
The interviews with industry insiders.
Any additional comments?
Listen to this book if your interested in knowing more about how the choices about what you eat are really being made by food industry professionals, especially if you think your the one choosing. You will be surprised.

Historia
It used to be that to diagnose an illness, interpret legal documents, analyze foreign policy, or write a newspaper article you needed a human being with specific skills - and maybe an advanced degree or two. These days, high-level tasks are increasingly being handled by algorithms that can do precise work not only with speed but also with nuance. These "bots" started with human programming and logic, but now their reach extends beyond what their creators ever expected.

A Google Search of a book.
Revisado: 04-08-13
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The best books of this genre are first person, deep insight and forward looking. This book came across as a cross between a Google Search and a history lesson. Felt like a "formula" and instead of making me want to know more it made me care less than I did before I started reading.
Has Automate This turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, I like the genre, but not this book.
What aspect of Walter Dixon’s performance would you have changed?
The Performance was dry and added nothing to the story.
Any additional comments?
I only finished the book so that I could give an honest review and not miss anything of value. At times it was painful. The Author should have known that it didn't come together, BUT the editor has no excuse. This has all the marks of a book that might have been interesting with great editing and more science, it had neither.
