Historia
Stephen McGown was en route from London to South Africa, on a once-in-a-lifetime trip by motorbike, returning home to Johannesburg. He had reached Timbuktu, in Mali, when he was captured, along with a Dutch and a Swedish national, by Al Qaeda Islamist militants. Steve was taken because he held a British passport. He was subsequently held hostage at various camps in the Sahara Desert in the north-west of Africa for nearly six years before eventually being released.

Historia
From one of the most revolutionary writers of the twentieth century comes the uncensored and gritty novel that inspired today's street lit and hip-hop culture. After my ninth birthday, I began to really understand the meaning of my name. I began to understand just what my mother was doing for a living. There was nothing I could do about it, but even had I been able to, I wouldn't have changed it.

Historia
Erno Rubik was a child when he first became obsessed with puzzles of all kinds. "Puzzles", he writes, "bring out important qualities in each of us: concentration, curiosity, a sense of play, the eagerness to discover a solution". To Rubik, puzzles aren't just games - they're creativity machines. He encourages us to embrace our inner curiosity and find the puzzles that surround us in our everyday lives. "If you are determined, you will solve them", he writes. Rubik's own puzzle, the Cube, has been solved by millions worldwide for more than 40 years....

Love cube; now dislike Rubick
Revisado: 07-24-22
What a smug bastard. I guess what can one expect? His creation is perfect. I love my cube. However this book has tarnished it for me. Cringey bombast ad infinitum. Mix of bragging how modest he is and how he enjoys traveling, fame, and spending money. Kill me.
Performed well.

Historia
"Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" So goes the signature introduction of New York Herald star journalist Henry Morton Stanley to renowned explorer Dr. David Livingstone, who had been missing for six years in the wilds of Africa. Into Africa ushers us into the meeting of these remarkable men. In 1866, when Livingstone journeyed into the heart of the African continent in search of the Nile's source, the land was rough, unknown to Europeans, and inhabited by man-eating tribes.

So much fun. Makes me ready to go travel again, while reminding me of the horrors imposed upon (and by) the early adventurers. The book was a splendid retreat from the quotidian. UPDATE: Even better the second time!!! So good!!!

Historia
Just after midnight on July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis is sailing alone in the Philippine Sea when she is sunk by two Japanese torpedoes. For the next five nights and four days, almost 300 miles from the nearest land, nearly 900 men battle injuries, sharks, dehydration, insanity, and eventually each other. Only 316 will survive. Lynn Vincent and Sara Vladic tell the complete story of the ship, her crew, and their final mission to save one of their own.

Over and over: The ship is important
Revisado: 08-04-21
The part about the men floating in the water is of course what you came for and it doesn't disappoint. I enjoyed that very much However, it should have begun and ended there. The book goes on and on and on about the bravery of the men and the importance of the ship. I get it. I would have cut 60%. If you are a survivor of this tragic event - and a conservative voter - you'll be teary throughout. For the rest of us, it's a drag. Listen to the action parts and skip the rest.

an entertaining tale but editor should have cut 75% to be more engaging. like a coke on ice that sat in the sun too long - still some flavor but damn, it's not that enjoyable either.

Historia
From Hiroshima to Chernobyl, Fukushima to the growing legacy of lethal radioactive waste, humanity's struggle to conquer atomic energy is rife with secrecy, deceit, human error, blatant disregard for life, short-sighted politics, and fear. Fallout is an eye-opening odyssey through the first eight decades of this struggle and the radioactive landscapes it has left behind. We are, Pearce finds, forever torn between technological hubris and all-too-human terror about what we have created.
