The Mongol army led by Genghis Khan subjugated more lands and people in 25 years than the Romans did in 400. In nearly every country the Mongols conquered, they brought an unprecedented rise in cultural communication, expanded trade, and a blossoming of civilization.

Super informative and, as the title of my review suggests, enlightening. It informs our knowledge about the Mongols’ wide-ranging contributions to world enlightenment and progress.

Historia
On the evening of their engagement party, Maine Game Warden Investigator Mike Bowditch and Stacey Stevens witness what seems to be a hit-and-run speedboat crash on a darkened lake. When they arrive at the scene, their spotlight reveals a gruesome sight: a severed arm floating just beneath the surface. As day breaks, the warden dive team recovers not one but two naked corpses: a dismembered man and the married woman with whom he was having an affair. Mike begins to suspect the swimmers' deaths were not a senseless accident but a coldly calculated murder.

Excellence

Extraordinarily well done! This is a pretty deep scientific dive, but mostly understandable for a non-scientific audience. Not as good as The Emperor of All Maladies, but still excellent.

Historia
The best-selling author of Hide and Gone draws us into the venomous mind games of a terrifying killer. For Kimberly Quincy, FBI Special Agent, it all starts with a pregnant hooker. The story Delilah Rose tells Kimberly about her johns is too horrifying to be true - but prostitutes are disappearing, one by one, with no explanation, and no one but Kimberly seems to care. As a member of the Evidence Response Team, dead hookers aren’t exactly Kimberly’s specialty. The young agent is five months pregnant - she has other things to worry about than an alleged lunatic.

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Fabulous Work
Revisado: 01-17-19
Prior to listening to Chernow’s biography of Grant, I knew only the historical high points of his life. Amazing, thorough and well written and performed. I now consider Grant one of the handful of great Americans in history and a personal hero. As Sherman stated at the end, nobody stronger and at the same time weak. Grant’s life simply is a fascinating story.

Historia
If the Bible isn’t a science book or an instruction manual, then what is it? What do people mean when they say the Bible is inspired? When Rachel Held Evans found herself asking these questions, she began a quest to better understand what the Bible is and how it is meant to be read. What she discovered changed her—and it will change you too.
Drawing on the best in recent scholarship and using her well-honed literary expertise, Evans examines some of our favorite Bible stories and possible interpretations, retelling them through memoir, original poetry, short stories, soliloquies, and even a short screenplay. Undaunted by the Bible’s most difficult passages, Evans wrestles through the process of doubting, imagining, and debating Scripture’s mysteries. The Bible, she discovers, is not a static work but is a living, breathing, captivating, and confounding book that is able to equip us to join God’s loving and redemptive work in the world.

What I’ve Been Seeking
Revisado: 07-19-18
I was raised in a conservative Christian tradition but became a member of the Episcopal Church as an adult. Nonetheless, those early teachings persisted in how I viewed the Bible . . . until my EfM experience. I then became somewhat unmoored from the Bible. This book has provided a foundational reconnection and for that I’m so thankful.
