Historia
John Harmon has tried everything to cure his severe insomnia: an endless stream of doctors, treatments, and multi-colored pills. So when he's finally admitted into an experimental sleep study promising to cure his ailment and pay for his daughter's chemotherapy, it's convenient that he doesn't suspect a thing. But the Skyline Facility, nestled in the mountains and only accessible by helicopter, is anything but normal.

Disappointing. I never cared about the characters, and I only listened to the entire book in hopes that the plot would get more interesting. Never happened.

Historia
The Montoyas are used to a life without explanations. They know better than to ask why the pantry never seems to run low, or why their matriarch won’t ever leave their home in Four Rivers - not for graduations, weddings, or baptisms. But when Orquídea Divina invites them to her funeral and to collect their inheritance, they hope to learn the secrets that she has held onto so tightly their whole lives. Instead, Orquídea is transformed into a ceiba tree, leaving them with more questions than answers.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Fabulous
Revisado: 11-15-23
I hesitated to buy this one, due to several negative reviews. I am glad I took the plunge! Expect to start the book confused, and gradually understand more as you go. I liked this book more than Clarke's first novel, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell. The closest comparison is another excellent work, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

Historia
First published in the US in 1988 and in the UK in 1990, The Wine-Dark Sea contains eight unsettling stories that explore protagonists' fears and desires, at once illogical and terrifying, and culminate in a disturbing and enigmatic ending. Aickman's "strange stories" (his preferred term for them) are a subtle exploration of psychological displacement and paranoia; his characters ordinary people that are gradually drawn into the darker recesses of their own minds. For fans of the horror genre, Robert Aickman is a must read.

Historia
In a powerful and gripping debut, Rachel Aviv raises fundamental questions about how we understand ourselves in periods of crisis and distress. Drawing on deep, original reporting as well as unpublished journals and memoirs, Aviv writes about people who have come up against the limits of psychiatric explanations for who they are. Animated by a profound sense of empathy, Aviv’s exploration is refracted through her own account of living in a hospital ward at the age of six and meeting a fellow patient with whom her life runs parallel—until it no longer does.

I heard an interview with the author, and the book sounded interesting. I stuck with it for just over half the book, but I am throwing in the towel. The stories are just not interesting to merit a full length book.I am hoping to return the book and get my credit back.

Historia
The scriptures are an essential aspect of the Christian faith. But we have often equated them with the living Word himself, even elevating them above the One to whom they point. In doing so, we have distorted their central message - and our view of God. Tragically, this has caused multitudes of people unnecessary doubt, confusion, and pain in their encounters with the scriptures.

Outstanding
Revisado: 09-05-22
Excellent book. The bibliolatry that I was "brought up in" in evangelical circles is unsustainable once you actually read Scriptures closely. By contrast, Jersak does a great job of guiding the reader to approach Scripture through the lens of Christ, the actual Word of God. One of my favorite quotes, early in the book, states, "The Word of God is inspired, infallible, and inerrant. And when He was around 18 he probably grew a beard."

Historia
The Last Man is Mary Shelley's apocalyptic fantasy of the end of human civilisation. Set in the late 21st century, the novel unfolds a sombre and pessimistic vision of mankind confronting inevitable destruction. Interwoven with her futuristic theme, Mary Shelley incorporates idealised portraits of Shelley and Byron, yet rejects Romanticism and its faith in art and nature.

Gave up
Revisado: 08-17-22
I was intrigued by the idea that this could be the first post-apocalyptic novel written, and Frankenstein is one of my favorites. Alas, after perhaps four hours of enduring a novel reminiscent of Jane Austin's, I threw in the towel. Life is too short to invest another 16 hours hoping for something to happen....

Historia
Here are the thrills, grandeur, and unabashed fun of the Greek myths, stylishly retold by Stephen Fry. The legendary writer, actor, and comedian breathes life into ancient tales, from Pandora's box to Prometheus's fire, and transforms the adventures of Zeus and the Olympians into emotionally resonant and deeply funny stories, without losing any of their original wonder. Learned notes from the author offer rich cultural context. This volume is a doorway into a captivating world.

Durant lucidly describes the philosophical systems of such world-famous “monarchs of the mind” as Plato, Aristotle, Francis Bacon, Spinoza, Kant, Voltaire, and Nietzsche. Along with their ideas, he offers their flesh-and-blood biographies, placing their thoughts within their own time and place and elucidating their influence on our modern intellectual heritage. This book is packed with wisdom and wit.

Historia
In the world of Gnomon, citizens are constantly observed and democracy has reached a pinnacle of "transparency". Every action is seen, every word is recorded, and the System has access to its citizens' thoughts and memories - all in the name of providing the safest society in history. When suspected dissident Diana Hunter dies in government custody, it marks the first time a citizen has been killed during an interrogation. The System doesn't make mistakes, but something isn't right about the circumstances surrounding Hunter's death.

It's okay
Revisado: 03-19-21
I wonder if this novel would be better read than listened to. It seems the author is intentionally keeping the reader disoriented throughout. Perhaps being able to easily go back and reorient ( with a physical book) might have helped. Also, the audiobook kept needing to be redownload every few days. I have no idea if that's the book's fault or the Audible app to blame.
