Historia
When your Monday morning begins with a dead dog and ends with a dead boss, you know it's going to be one of those days. And breakfast TV reporter Cora Baxter has already had the weekend from hell, where the man she'd planned a fabulous future with unceremoniously dumped her. Now Cora's much-hated boss has been murdered. The list of suspects isn't exactly short, but as the enquiry continues, the trail leads frighteningly close to home.

Booze, sex, clueless questioning
Revisado: 02-16-18
What did you love best about The Dead Dog Day?
The thing I loved best about The Dead Dog Day is Zara Ramm. Superb narration.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The main character doesn't actually do any investigative work - she is a reporter, and assigned to cover the murder of her boss, but she doesn't do any investigation, and she even, supposedly, likes covering crime. But all she really does is drink--a lot--gossip, and sleep around while daydreaming about another man. If the title of the series is called The CORA BAXTER Mysteries, then it seems like it should be about Cora Baxter actually figuring out the mystery.
Have you listened to any of Zara Ramm’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Zara Ramm does a great job narrating this story. I really liked her on the Chronicles of St. Mary's by Jodi Taylor, but she does an equally great job with this book. In fact, she was the only reason I even gave this book a try.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The moment in the book that particularly moved me was when it was finally over. Cora Baxter is an idiot; in the last three chapters, the action FINALLY picks up, but even when she HAS BEEN TOLD (not figured it out herself) what is going on, she doesn't take precautions against bad things happening to her.
Any additional comments?
I don't think I will be reading the next books in the series, which is unfortunate because I was ready for a modern, this world (not alternate reality) woman to solve crimes and stick it to the police and show them how it should be done. Unfortunately, the Cora Baxter Mysteries will not be the ticket.

Getting a life isn't always easy. And hanging on to it is even harder.... Jodi Taylor brings all her comic writing skills to this heartwarming tale of self-discovery. Known as The Nothing Girl because of her severe stutter and chronically low self-confidence, Jenny Dove is only just prevented from ending it all by the sudden appearance of Thomas, a mystical golden horse only she can see. Under his guidance Jenny unexpectedly acquires a husband - the charming and chaotic Russell Checkland.

Fantastic!

Intriguing. Fresh idea. Reminiscent of Mansfield Park. Love the psychology of Thomas the golden horse. Kept me guessing to the end. Lucy Price-Lewis did a splendid performance.

Favorite enough to ignore narrator
Revisado: 02-16-17
The narrator on this performance is horrible. But I love the story and the characters so much that I was able to ignore her voice and performance to at least enjoy the story. Aerin is a young woman in this story - it should be performed by a younger-sounding narrator. Alexander has a voice that I associate with my creaky aunt who read stories like a robot. Not an enjoyable listen, but still a good story and character. I much prefer to read the novel myself.

For fans of Louise Penny, C. J. Box, and Nevada Barr comes a haunting crime novel set in Glacier National Park, where one man finds himself on a collision course with the dark heart of the wild and the even darker heart of human nature.

Gut-clenching & Breath-taking
Revisado: 09-19-16
I thought it was quite good. I generally enjoy paranormal mystery, but am taking a break from that; I have also enjoyed Craig Johnson's LONGMIRE MYSTERY series. This is similar but definitely more gritty. The description of the crime scene is reminiscent of later episodes of FOX''s BONES where the point of the initial crime scene and autopsy was to disgust and horrify the audience. If you can enjoy that, then this should not be a problem. Also, the language the characters use is more vulgar and, probably, more realistic.
I found there were enough twists in the mystery to keep me interested until the very end, even though I guessed who the perpetrator. And then, of course, there was the mystery behind Ted's past. That was exceptional; riveting and exciting. There were a lot of characters to keep up with, and as an audiobook, I sometimes had to pause to place the name or jump back to catch who was talking or being referred to.
I listen while I am working, so I am slightly distracted, but found the narrator to be quite good. His voice is a nice base, with a gravely rumble, which fits perfectly with the story, the main character, and the animalistic nature of the novel.
This is definitely not a story you would want to listen to with the family while on vacation (especially to a National Forest), but definitely a good suspense mystery novel.
