Historia
Traveling to Oregon by covered wagon in 1844 is an exciting adventure for 13-year-old John Sager and his family. The Oregon Trail leads over mountains of broken rock, across churning rivers, and through hostile Indian territory. Each day brings new scenery and challenges. But after months of grueling travel, his father dies - then 11 days later John buries his mother. Suddenly the six young Sagers are alone - and John is the head of the family!

Great story, horrible choice of words.

My kids loved this audiobook, asking to listen to it over their music. The Narrator's voice was just amazing. The story, though a fictionalized account of the Sager children, including a Kit Carson intersection, was enthralling. I usually do not censor the older books with their word choice about people groups. I choose instead to talk with my kids about the prejudice of author and people group as it comes up. This book refers to biracial people of English/Spanish or Spanish/ Indigenous people as HALF BREEDS.

Do not read this book to adventurous children.

My three kids enjoyed this story about a Burro who roamed the grand canyon. It is a fictional story that weaves through the history of the canyon in the late 1800's including the building of Silver Bridge, a presidential visit, and real people of that time. The kids have already been planning a trip down Bright Angel Trail. Spoiler:. this story has some scary elements such as a murder, apprehension of murderer with use of guns, and an accidental shooting.
