I have seen some reviews citing the time jumps and multiple characters of the narrative as reasons they didn't enjoy this. While it's true - at first, it's hard to keep up with who is who in what time period, after the first few chapters, I had it. If you get this - and you so should - stick with this one!

I broke up with K.S. after the end of the Grant County series. She broke my heart and blew up my spirit. I was never going back. I was a spurned reader.
After picking this one up and giving her another chance, I'm a total fangirl again! If you love Karin Slaughter, you'll love this book.
Further, she STILL has the sister connection so strongly locked in!

Reading through the reviews on this before getting the book as part of a "twofer," I noted that the reviews were divided; that only furthered my interest. This author writes like she knows a thing or two about a thing or two about alcoholism/addiction. Yes, some spots dragged, but having been new to sobriety before, it only made the story more authentic. The second half of the book nailed it! I'd spend the credit and the time!

PERMANENTLY SHELVED

Since I shelved this book, I don't feel comfortable giving it a full review.

I will say why, I shelved it.

I read A Little Pinprick and was horrified, mortified, and all the—ides by Rainey Paxton's miserable existence.

I was excited by the premise of this book but once I got rolling, I felt a disturbing sense of déjà vu. No, the stories weren't identical but they were just too close... it felt like re-reading any other P. Dearth novel.

TWs: neonatal drug abuse, descriptive IV drug abuse, withdrawal from heroin in infancy, domestic violence, child abuse, child sexual abuse, extreme neglect, terminal illness, homicide, prostitution, coarse language

POV : 3rd person

I have seen so many conflicting reviews on this book—this series. People either love it or think it’s overly dramatic and not enough time is spent developing Rainey’s character. They say the author spends too much time hopping from one horror in her life to the next.

I get personal in my reviews because most of the books I read evoke a strong emotional reaction in me. I feel like we don’t get to know Rainey on a deeper level because when you live that kind of life (in whatever capacity) you spend more of your life surviving moment to moment and not developing a deep awareness of self or a soothing self-care ritual..

Survival is all Rainey Paxton has known: from the first breaths of life until the end of the book, all she can do is survive the utterly craptastic circumstances she finds herself in. There are very rarely happy endings in stories like this.

I went into this with high expectations. I wasn't let down! Great story, great narration! I highly recommend this to fans of thrillers!

LONGER REVIEW:

TWs: abduction, hostage situations, homicide

POV: dual perspective (Camilla & Niall, the hostage negotiator) told between the Day of and 7 years later

“It’s been so lovely with you both.”

It strikes me as an American how out of the ordinary it is for a random London citizen to have a pistol, even most officers are armed with a baton and pepper spray. Meanwhile, over here in America, every officer and often, security guards carry firearms. The last time I got a pedi, the man doing it was open-carrying a 9-millimeter.

Mass shootings rarely happen in London. I count three school shootings. The last one in Scotland in 1996, known as the Dunblane massacre, sparked SERIOUS changes in gun-ownership. Most handguns and semi-automatic weapons were banned. They also made shotgun registration mandatory of all owners.

When a mass shooting was being planned in North Yorkshire in 2018,“SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING” was an action, not a slogan.

Allow me to dismount from my soapbox:

Gillian, you are the sh1t! This book grabbed me – hook, line, sinker – from the opening chapter.
Camilla (Cam) is a new mom who is getting ready to return to work after having her first child (Polly). She works for a publishing company in the area and is excited to return to the world of grown-up conversations and getting paid to read books – her dearest hobby/form of escape from the mundanity of everyday life. However, she has the guilt many moms experience when returning to the workforce and leaving their baby in the care of ’ strangers.’

Cam is a little bothered by her husband’s absence from the morning plans but not overly so. He is a loving and devoted husband and father and she’s certain there’s a plausible reason he’s not present on this important day.

After dropping Polly off at daycare, Cam goes into work and settles cozily back into reading for pleasure… work. She is disturbed by a news report that a siege was underway at a nearby(ish) warehouse.

She is further disturbed by police who come to her office to inform her that her husband (Luke) is caught up in the siege. She is distraught, as anyone would be. Then she inquires about who is holding him hostage?! She can’t think of anyone or any reason this would happen to him; he’s just… Luke.

Then comes the first in a series of twists: He is not a hostage. He is the gunman.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys twisty thrillers full of nail-biting suspense! She also manages to deftly weave into this gripping novel a love story that transcends … all. It’s all emotional as well so be prepared!

TWs: violence, murder, suicide, and infidelity

POV: unnamed man (a father?) – “Tobias”, alias

An unnamed man, his wife, Millicent, and their two young teenage children: she works in real estate; he is a tennis instructor at the local country club. The kids are decent students, college-bound, involved in extracurriculars, and glued to their screens, in other words, the average teenager.

They aren’t outlandishly wealthy but they are comfortable. They are your stereotypical suburban family.

Like some other long-married couples, there reaches a point where you have to find a way to reignite the spark. Some couples pick up women to throw a bit of ‘kink’ into things. These people pick up women for a wholly different reason.

This isn’t the first time but this time is different and not for reasons that may seem predictable.
This story is anything but…

This book is for anyone who loves a good thriller, well-developed characters, and their interactions.

This book isn’t for people who are easily upset by fiction that pushes them outside their comfort zone.

If this is you, stay in your area.

I have added this to my Top Twenty - no great thinking went into that decision - it's a great story!
