Historia
A small village on a Jamaican island. A girl who doesn't remember the previous summer. A best friend who is no longer acting like one; a new girl who fills that hole in her heart. A summer of finding fallen mangos, creating made up games and dancing in the rain. Secrets she keeps from others...and herself. The courage to face the truth even in the toughest of storms. Inspired by the author's childhood experiences, When Life Give You Mangos is a celebration of island life as well as a rich, lyrical mystery.

Historia
In the second half of the 18th century, as European imperial conflicts extended the domain of capitalist agriculture, warring African factions fed their captives to the transatlantic slave trade while masters struggled continuously to keep their restive slaves under the yoke. In this contentious atmosphere, a movement of enslaved West Africans in Jamaica (then called Coromantees) organized to throw off that yoke by violence. Their uprising - which became known as Tacky's Revolt - featured a style of fighting increasingly familiar today....

Narrator is dull, doesn’t hold your attention well. But it’s a fascinating topic to which the author has given a lot of attention to obscure particulars.

Good story of authentic JA except rushed ending; tediously narrated
Revisado: 02-22-25
Loved the depictions of country life in Jamaica with the food, smells, trees, roads, gossip and family dynamics. But it was all a build up to an ending that wasn’t fully fleshed out. Almost like the publishing deadline crippled the climax and left no room for denouement. The narrator over emphasized and enunciated each word making it an unpleasant listen and robbing the story of its rhythm. I bought 2 more of Heman’s books hardcopy and am looking forward to finding her own voice.

Historia
In this prize-winning poetry collection, we watch as the cartographer, used to assuming control over a place by mapping it, is gradually compelled to recognise a wholly different understanding of place as he tries to map his way to the rastaman’s eternal city of Zion. As the book unfolds the cartographer learns that every place name comes freighted with history, and not every place that can be named can be found.

Trigger warning needed. Should have had a ghost writer and paid narrator.
Revisado: 09-13-24
Writing and narration severely lacking. Got the year of Hurricane Gilbert wrong while claiming to have lived through it. Several other inconsistencies proved distracting from the message, which ultimately was inspiring. Biggest issue- no trigger warning in description or intro for graphic rape and fight scenes.

Historia
Since its founding in 1959, Island Records has been home to legendary artists representing wildly divergent musical styles, yet who share the same maverick, outsider spirit of its founder, Chris Blackwell. Time and again, Blackwell and his Island cohorts identified and nurtured musicians overlooked by other labels, including Bob Marley, U2, Cat Stevens, Grace Jones, Roxy Music, Traffic, Nick Drake, Tom Waits, Robert Palmer, Free, the B-52’s, John Martyn, and Jimmy Cliff.

Erotic romance novel but childish
Revisado: 12-09-22
Coming of age/finding herself/daddy issues. Copious sexual content without actual sex. To be fair, erotic is not my genre, and this is the first one ever read. Selected for interest in Jamaica and disappointed by naïveté. Near constant exaggeration repeatedly describing small situations with similar language so as to remove any validity when actual tragedy strikes. Good first attempt for a young writer but more a personal story than one for the public.
