Historia
The only thing more troublesome than a Cynster man...is a Cynster lady who believes love is not her destiny. Famously known in London society as "The Matchbreaker", Henrietta Cynster's uncanny skill lies in preventing ill-fated nuptials - not in falling victim to Cupid's spell. But then she disrupts one match too many and feels honor-bound to assist dashing James Glossup in finding a suitable bride for a marriage of convenience.

Decent story, narrator is a disappointment.
Revisado: 12-16-17
Story has some good moments but it is a rehash of so many preceding stories of the Cynsters. Maybe that is deliberate.
Narrator just doesn't make it. His voice seems just wrong for such a book; his voice is very "growly" at times. He rarely shifts his voice for different people. There is little pacing, which could be effective in place of modulating voices from character to character.

Historia
In 1941: Fighting the Shadow War: A Divided America in a World at War, historian Marc Wortman thrillingly explores the little-known history of America's clandestine involvement in World War II before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Prior to that infamous day, America had long been involved in a shadow war. Winston Churchill, England's beleaguered new prime minister, pleaded with Franklin D. Roosevelt for help. FDR concocted ingenious ways to come to his aid without breaking the Neutrality Acts.

Excellent narration. I listened to this oddly enough on June 6th and finished the December 7th chapters the next morning. There were dialogues scattered through the book that the author assumed, but I suspect these were in line with the characters and circumstances and did not distract. The author's research and notes in the epilogue are comprehensive. I was born 6 weeks before Dec 7th and wish I could ask my parents about this period from 1939 to 1941. They were always intensely interested in local and federal government and politics and I know they would have followed the news and have reactions. My sister recalls her and my brother collecting scrap metal and similar activities in the war effort. I have always been so intrigued with WWII and have read many histories of the period, including Shirer's "The Nightmare Years", the Churchll series, etc. This book adds to my collection but raises questions as well. I highly recommend the book and the audio version is very well done.

disappointing
Revisado: 01-21-15
What would have made Darius: Lord of Pleasure better?
Narrator with a voice more appropriate for the story - more mellow perhaps??? Also a narration preferably synced to the text; this is not. This narrator makes changes in the text so perhaps that is why the text and narration are not linked??
What other book might you compare Darius: Lord of Pleasure to and why?
Hard to say. The Lonely Lord series is enjoyable but this audio version is very disappointing
How did the narrator detract from the book?
His voice is too high pitched and what little I chose to listen to, was without variation in pitch, tone, quality, emotion
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Darius: Lord of Pleasure?
Any additional comments?
I have returned this audiobook as it is such a disappointment. I have read Darius and looked forward to a narration but this is a distraction. I like to be able to read along or not, depending on the story, and really do not like when the narrator changes what has already been written.

Historia
It is a chill and foggy 12th Night, wild with North Sea wind, when a bizarre murder disturbs the outward peace of Rackmoor, a tiny Yorkshire fishing village with a past that proves a tangled maze of unrequited loves, unrevenged wrongs, and even undiscovered murders. Inspector Jury finds no easy answers in his investigation - not even the identity of the victim, a beautiful young woman. Was she Gemma Temple, an impostor? Or was she really Dillys March, Colonel Titus Crael’s long-lost ward, returning after eight years to the Colonel’s country seat and to a share of his fortune? And who was her murderer?

Second reading through narration a real pleasure
Revisado: 07-14-14
Where does The Old Fox Deceiv'd rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Top 5
Who was your favorite character and why?
Richard Jury and Melrose Plant. They are strong men with different personalities formed out of different upbringings yet they develop an intuitive relationship as the books move through the series. While the books can be stand alone, reading them in sequence lets you see this respect grow; you also meet the other characters with all their eccentricities as they move in and out of the books. They are a treat and how Jury and Plant interact with them is great fun.
Have you listened to any of Steve West’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
So far, this is my 3rd book I'm "rereading" with narration by Steve West. The Audible narration is a true delight. I read all the Martha Grimes Richard Jury books years ago, up to her latest. Her earlier ones are her best as one follows the eccentric characters through several books.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
These are murder mysteries after all so the subject is not humorous. However, there are lots of chuckles especially with Mr. West's narration catching the sarcasm and off kilter humor of the characters. He conveys the dry humor and quirkiness in these books so well yet the seriousness of the murder(s) comes across strongly in his narration.
Any additional comments?
Mr. West has an impressive range for the various voices, so much so at times I almost think more than one person is speaking the various voices. He doesn't use extremes for a female voice or a child's voice yet he captures these very well.

Historia
As war moves ever closer, the sleepy English village of Crowmarsh Priors settles into a new sort of normal: Evacuees from London are billeted in local homes. The nightly German air raids become grimly mundane. Rationing curtails every comfort. Men leave to fight and die. And five women forge a bond of friendship that will change their lives forever in this engrossing novel of loyalty, loss, and love in the shadow of World War II.With the hardships of war intensifying every day, the women band together to defeat formidable enemies and find remarkable strength within themselves to help one another. It is a war-forged loyalty certain to endure years and distance. When four of the women return for a celebration fifty years later, their mission is not simply to commemorate or remember. They’ve returned to confront a traitor whose actions cost countless lives — and to avenge one of their own at last.

ok read
Revisado: 03-08-14
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Would recommend to a friend who would be interested in WWII history of this nature
What did you like best about this story?
The perspective of WWII from the female POV
What three words best describe Tavia Gilbert’s performance?
Accents, voice changes are quite good
Was War Brides worth the listening time?
yes
Any additional comments?
Sync between voice and text was choppy and not always together; narrator's voice dropped the end of sentences at times that seemed more the fault of the recording, not the narrator's. The narrator's accent was so good and thick at times that I needed to read along for clarity. Story starts and builds slowly so that about a third of the way through I started reading from the last chapter and then back chapter by chapter. I do this with a lot of books that are slow reads. Story is interesting and worth the time.
