Historia
For young single women, every night is Ladies' Night. For Brett Paesel and her friends, Friday happy hour is all they get, if they can wrangle the babysitting. Like most mommies, they support each other through pregnancies, sleep deprivation, and the need to talk about it all. Instead of meeting at the playground, they convene at the local watering hole while sipping Black and Tans and flirting with the cute bartender.

Goofy, yet surprisingly gripping
Revisado: 12-22-10
I heard some nuance of all of my friends in each of these characters and a good number of the events, which only made the funny parts funnier. It's not life altering or side splitting, but it IS funny, well written and I teared up at the end.

Historia
Early in his career, A.J. Jacobs put his Ivy League education to work at Entertainment Weekly. He emerged five years later knowing which stars have fake boobs, which stars have toupees, which have both, and not much else. This realization led Jacobs on a life-changing quest: to read the entire contents of the Encyclopedia Britannica, all 33,000 pages, all 44 million words.

Meh
Revisado: 12-22-10
Good premise, but the telling drones on with brief flashes of humor. It "read" like actually reading through the encyclopedia, NOT the best material to hook a reader or listener beyond the first handful of factoids.

A strong who-dunnit
Revisado: 12-22-10
I listened to the first in this series and liked it so much I eagerly searched out the second. I would actually give this about 3.5 stars as the narrator and mystery of who the bad guy/guys was were excellent, but this wasn't quite the gripping storyline that the first book had. Still worth the purchase tho and I hope Catherine Sampson continues this character in audiobooks. It makes my drive time zip by!

Historia
Port Mortuary, the title of Patricia Cornwell's 18th Scarpetta novel, is literally a port for the dead. In this fast-paced story, a treacherous path from Scarpetta's past merges with the high-tech highway she now finds herself on. We travel back to the beginning of her professional career, when she accepted a scholarship from the air force to pay off her medical school debt. Now, more than 20 years and many career successes later, her secret military ties have drawn her to Dover Air Force Base, where she has been immersed in a training fellowship.

Huge Disappointment
Revisado: 12-22-10
I've read all of Patricia Cornwell's books and been a fan of Kay Scarpetta for years. But this - between the narrator's unyielding whispery monotone (like nails on a chalkboard) to Kay seemingly losing her backbone while allowing all of her "loved" ones to treat her like the senile great aunt who came to dinner....A hugely disappointing purchase and sad to see/hear a favorite character turn into a neurotic, hyper paranoid, one-dimensional shadow of her former self. Utterly depressing storyline and thoroughly unlikable characters.

The best mystery series I've "read" in years!
Revisado: 12-03-10
A true mystery, no bodice ripping, totally addictive! The protagonist is fascinating, as are the details of daily life in the 1100's. It may not be believable from a cut and dried historically accurate perspective (probably not a lot of coroner work back then) but I love the idea that it MIGHT have been true and nothing feels like it's bordering on fantasy.

Historia
"I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger...." writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up "1922", the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.

Not my favorite King works, but not bad
Revisado: 12-03-10
Overall these stories were ok, but none made a lasting impression. One was memorable less for the storyline and more for the never ending gross-out factor. I've always loved the "voice" of Stephen King's characters and maybe it was the narrators in the stories, but the characters in these stories don't seem as well spoken.

Excellent writing and narration
Revisado: 12-03-10
I found this series when I rejoined audible and was hooked within the first five minutes of listening. I have nothing but good things to say about both the writing and the narration! The interaction among the characters is interesting, humorous and believable and the who-dunnit in each novel is never easy to figure out, something I appreciate immensely! No bodice rippers disguised as a weakly written mystery - yea!

Meh.
Revisado: 12-03-10
The story itself is a bit predictable and very "romance-lite", but not bad. The narrator is AWFUL! Stilted, droning and sounds like the narrator for those old reel to reel videos in HS biology classes.
