I need knew this was an abridges version because of all the excellent reviews. I am rereading the unabridged paperback novel after 14 years.
If you are not familiar with the story or have never read the novel as intended. This "sample" audio version does leave out the true essence of the lives and struggles of the free people of color. Those characters coming truly alive is lost. The spirit of this abridged novel has lost some of its heart. THEREFORE IT IS WORTH READING THE BOOK IN FULL AS IT WAS WRITTEN! However, knowing this and going ahead and giving this version a chance, I was not disappointed! The narrator is excellent and I was engrossed.

Requesting unabridged version with same narrator!

I'm a woman who loves sci-fi and fantasy. I also love how this series is narrated I a strong storytelling woman. It's so rare to get a woman narrator in this genre. It should be applauded. I've Loved David Gemmell for as long as I can remember. I also love all his audio books. It's nice to have a variety of narrators when it comes to different sagas.

Gemmell wrote this novel as a way to cope while his mom battled cancer and lost. If you keep that in mind you can feel his sorrow in this storyline. I have been reading Gemmell since, I found him, in the 90s. I love that all his characters are flawed. He also has a talent for weaving classic stories and spinning them in ways that were new to me. Easy fun read. One of my favorite authors.
Narrator: I enjoy listening to him. I love how he is British because Gemmell is British. It sounds true to the story. I hate it when things get Americanized. To me, it loses its richness. Example: Harry Potter Series
Don't want to commit to a David Gemmell series? Try 'Legend'. Prefer a female protagonist by Gemmell? Hawk Queen Series

I truly enjoy Jim Dale but I do wish this book came in the orginal British text instead of the American version. It is BS when a book set in England and doesn't stay true to the British roots. For example: change the title from Philosopher's Stone to Sorcerer's Stone and changing football to scoccer, and crumpets to donuts, and so on, just to accommodate American readers. When I first listened to Jim Dale's version I was really disappointed. It is not Dale's fault, it is Rowling's fault. When Rowling gave the publisher premission to substitute all the British out of the Harry Potter Series just to accommodate Americans it killed my flow!

This translation transported me back to the real world and that sucks. T I kept rewinding this audiobook to make sure I was hearing it correctly. When I realized this novel wasn't framed in the orginal context I was deeply saddened. My mind wondered because Hogwarts no longer seems to be in England. Additionally, this traslated version gives iff the impression that London can be any city in Northern America. King's Cross is an Amtrak station where you can find platform 9 3/4. I am so disappointed that our only option for the Harry Potter's series is not offered in the orginal format.

Stephen Fry is British and an amzing narrator who narrates the orginal Harry Potter series. Don't get me wrong, Jim Dale is an amazing narrator too; however, if a book is set in England, it should remain true to its cultural identity. When I 1st listened to this "translation" It was a shock. This translated series lost my visual imagaination because Harry, all the characters, and places sounded very American. How can everyone sound American when they are all born and raised in England? I thought, "geez, this sucks! Even the movies tried to stay more authentic than this translated version. The Harry Potter movies ONLY hired English actors because these novels are all strongly set in the UK. It really bothered me. So, I researched why. This is what I found out:

Rowling acknowledged these changes and referred to them as "translated" versions to help American readers and listeners. She believes that Americans would not understand the orginal versions. To defend her American translation she stated that if the French needed translation then Americans do too.

WTF? Shame, shame, shame! It is a missed opportunity for all American adults and children to know Brits and their culture. We learn through language. for Americans who have never travelled to the UK. The original books to widen cultural prospectives, ask questions, earn new words, and more.

These translated novels fall short.

If you have never read the orginal. I urge you to. Or if yoy never listened to Stephen Fry's narration of the Harry Potter series, I urge you to listen.

Other then that the book is still good but not as much fun.

The story takes you on a journey of self and search. You feel a real heart strumming for the writer to find her voice and tell her story.
I listen to many audiobooks because I cannot see letters. So, audiobooks take words off the page and I hear them as pictures. "Without You, There's No Us" I heard my life's story put more elegantly then I could put into words.
I have shared this audiobook with my mom ,who knows me. And My mom said, "this book is beautiful."
I cried when listening. You can hear the conflict of the writer's heart that you empathize with. If you travel and feel somewhere and nowhere all at once. Then wonder if you are lost. This book is for you.
note: to get this work out of North Korea is a work of a journalistic spy.
